April 2005: Potpourri

Had a great time this month. Several armies were brought to the game by Chuck, Pat, and myself. While Chuck and Pat brought decent armies, I constructed the worst possible armies you could imagine.

First game was a four player. I got a Feral/Goblin army, Chuck had a Treefolk army, Matt got a Lava Elf army, and poor Pat got my monster/artifact army. Victory went to Chuck with a path to victory.

Game two had five players. I got the Feral/Goblin army once again, Pat got the Lava Elves, Matt got a Goblin army, Jim got a Firewalker army, and Chuck unfortunately got my monster/item army. Victory went to me by using a Wind Walk/Transmute Rock to Mud combo to outmaneuver Chuck and Matt for my second 8th face.

Game three had six players. I got yet again the Feral/Goblin army, Pat got my monster/artifact army again, Matt got the Treefolk, Jim had the Goblins, Chuck had the Lava Elves, and player six (sorry, I didn't catch your name) got the Firewalker army. This game was called on time, with Matt taking the victory by having an 8th face and least dead. Dragons did some real damage in this game, wiping one player out and doing considerable damage to another.

See you next month!

May 2005: Single Race

Game one: Five players took part in this battle. Pat and Jim both brought Treefolk, Chuck and Rich both had herds of Feral, and I brought a flock of Frostwings. I guess everyone wanted that gold magic (except me). This ended up being a short game, with Chuck taking the win with the old Path to Victory.

For game two, we were joined by John and split up into a couple of 3-player games.

Game 2A: Pat brought out her army of Feral, Jim used his Treefolk army again, and I used my Feral run-and-gun army. This game also went by fairly quickly. A combination of Jim's green dragon and my Feral army eliminated Pat from the game, then I turned my Feral army on Jim and won via a war of attrition (although Jim got pretty close to a Path to Victory with one 8th and another terrain at the 7th face).

Game 2B: Rich used a Lava Elf army, John used a Feral army, and Chuck brought out an army of Amazons. War of attrition and dragons eliminated Chuck from the game first. A few rounds later, John's Feral army had killed of enough of Rich's Elves to Path to Victory.

Game three: Back to a five player game. Again, gold magic was seen everywhere. Pat and Rich used Feral armies, Chuck brought out the Goblins, Jim used his Treefolk again, and I used another Frostwing army. This game got called on time. Pat, Rich, and Chuck got 8th faces quickly. While I was going for my first 8th, I became the big target of the game. Jim was using his Treefolk magic to Transmute Rock to Mud/Flash Flood/Dragon my army. Then the other three tried to win via Path to Victory. My army held them back the first round (wings are good). The game was going to end on time the second round, so I went thru a Wall of Thorns (ouch) to get an eighth face. Then Rich won on health in play.

See you next month!

June 2005: Battlefest

We only managed to get in one game with five players. Pat brought an army of Goblins, Chuck had a mixture of Feral and Treefolk, Rich used a Firewalker/Scalder army, and Jim and I both brought Undead armies. The game started off slowly as most of the terrains started at low numbers. Pat got an eighth face quickly, then the dragons started dropping out of the sky. Chuck got the next eighth face. Rich tried to take it away with an entire army of Burning-handed units, but instead Rich got wiped out in the counter-attack. Next I went after Chuck, and between the dragons and my army, managed to wipe out most of Chuck's units, allowing me to take the eighth face. Dragon breaths were coming up almost every time the dragons were rolled, sometimes two breaths in a single attack! Meanwhile, Jim had been quietly reviving his dead units and took an eighth face for himself. Shortly after, the game was called on time, and Jim won on health in play.

See you next month.

No Duplicate Monster Bash

We split into 2 groups:
Pat won 3 straight games in group one.
Each win was from a different army.

Group two....
consisted of SFR President Chuck Pint (on his birthday)
Brad (Director or Windy City Bone Rollers)
& Rich
This group's monsters tipped the scale in ultra rares off the chart.
to name a few:
Promo Frost Ogre (yellow ink)
Promo Unseelie (the black one)
Promo Will o' Wisp (the black one) and original one
Original Unseelie
Beholder......(this one had 9 lives)
Death Naga
DracoLich
and every other rare possible
also a Dragon Champion GOLD UK

Each player had an 8th face
and what seemed like a see-saw battle of wits, finally ended after 4 hours
with Chuck pathing to victory, adding a flare he used a group monster
(Will o' Wisp) which produced an additional wings maneuver.

"Unseelie" you next month!
Jim

The Chuck Roll:

If you have ever witnessed the Chuck Roll, then you probably know
why it has been named accordingly.
Many have tried to accomplish the Chuck Roll,
but only Chuck knows the secret.
It is an overwhelming onslaught dice roll that produces
massive results, way out of balance to any previous roll in the game.

Many Windy City Bone Rollers have produced a......
"that was almost a Chuck Roll"
just not the real thing Wink

Hey, I've produced a Chuck roll now and again. Not as often as Chuck though (is he in league with Phil or what?).

Just for fun tonight, I snapped a couple of pictures during our games.

Here we have Jim Rayborn (right) getting ready to roll his army while Chuck Pint (left) looks on. Sorry Jim, I didn't mean to cut off your head Smile

Here's Jim carefully considering his next move.

Here, Matt (right) is deciding what to do with his army before he rolls it; Rich (left) is always ready to give advice. On the far right is Chuck's elbow.

Here is a close up of some of the new Ivory Dragons. Cool

We had Special Guests sweetberlinetta and frdm02
in a 7 player all common game.
Ray and Dave are from Wisconsin.
Ray who is a notorious heavy roller, had to accommodate
6 blue dragons and a few back to back blue breaths,
that did not seem to slow him down.

My army was Sunbursts and Antelope-folks
with blue Speed Slippers and blue Sight Stones.
Here was my magic combos:
This was used to try to clear out armies, even on 8th faces.

Scent of Fear
Mirage (works great with all common armies)
Hailstorm (to finish off the remaining units)
Path

Special thanks to Chuck for the White Drake and White Wyrm prize.
Pat awarded me both White Dragons for winning. Cool Very Happy
Special thanks to Pat as well.
Pat gave everyone the new Starter Rules Book.

Allot of players had 8th faces.

Mr. Green:

This turned out the be a Dragon Festival.
Almost every dragon attack featured a Breath,
many from the White Dragon,
and several times, the Ivory Dragons rolled Double Dreath.
The best dragon roll came at the final roll of the night,
piMaster rolled tail on a single Green Dragon 9 times in a row.
(followed by a claw) Mr. Green

Actually, the dragon rolled 7 Tails and then Claws.
Odds of that happening: 1 in 21845

My green dragons were also rolling plenty of breaths against Pat's army Twisted Evil

But you both left off the best part. Yes, Brad got 7 tails in row, but the best part is that this was a dragon attack with his own dragons against his own army.....

MM100
misfit monster 100 review:

We added a slight modification...
no hybrids or white dragons.
3 player games

So what we found,
the Mosters themselves did not really need the dragons as their SAI were plentiful.

So even though the dragons brought to the table (5 each player)
they did not have the overwhelming grasp on the game that I thought might be.

Illusion and Dispel Magic seemed to have the most defense.

Everyone gathered their forces into one big army and separate terrains.

As soon as one player went to attack another,
they left their terrain week.

So perhaps head to head would prove a different style of play.

GenCon's format is usually head to head.

Game winners:

Teleport/Windwalk: this combo wiggled its way around Illusion

Ferry/Transmute: this combo brings a monster with the gryphon to the final maneuver bid

but last but not least....
Plauge Twisted Evil
with an all monster army... one plauge was able to take out many monsters in one turn.
