|

Now that Battle Chest has been out for a while and Magic Item usage has inevitably grown as a result, I'm curious what everybodys favorite rare Magic Item or artifact S.A.I. may be.
I'll kick it off with my personal fave,
ATTUNE! |

Elevate is probably my favourite SAI. I like it because it is very versatile, it depicts what the Magic carpet does in a great way, and it is one of the few SAIs that interacts with missile results.

Dial is right. Any icon that can work in multiple roll types is king. If you can get 3 different uses out of an SAI then you really doing well. I will 2nd Elevate. Maneuver, missile, saves? I mean come on! _________________ Will

I've been torn between Elevate (for basically the exact reasons that Skawilly mentioned) and wayfare.
Wayfare on a Ghost is just absolutely delightful |

I must admit that Decapitate (and to the same extent, Impale) was a close second. It was not until I found one of my monsters on the receiving end of the SAI that I realized how much damage the thing does. Not only does it kill a unit, but it also deprives the army of the saves generated by the unit. In the most positive case, this means an equivalent of dealing 8 melee damage. With rares and monsters being as popular as they are, it is slightly surprising you don't see more Vorpal Swords and Heartseekers.
Which is kind of the tragic charm of magic items. Almost all of them have great SAIs (I consider Sortie to be relatively boring), but somehow they still tend to end up being relatively play-shy.

The blade golem is nice because its flurry acts as a save...
which may be overlooked when deciding the worthiness of this artifact.
So it may not perform the great multi-flurry, that other reroll units or medallions can provide, but since it needs to be carried, it's a nice save producing melee component.
Still...
the medallions seem to be better...
for save and melee...
however the artifacts have an ID which can produce magic.
As far as the Vorpal Sword...
keep in mind it's only 2 construction points.
The vorpal sword is a great addition to a melee focused army.
Why don't we see it more?
Basically, melee focused armies are powerful and are usually avoided.
This avoidance gives the vorpal sword extra value as it can be carried for an assassination style attack.
One other thing...
the vorpal sword provides some extra dragon protection...
see decapitate:
likewise the blade golem too can be a dragon save/killing machine.
I still like the medallions better,
however the ID is really a nice thing if it shows up when you need it.
OH....what's my favorite rare or artifact?
Seven league boot/ dragon staff
I like the seven league becuase of its cost...
and it moves 1 unit...
so you get the bonus of its cost plus it moves a unit...
not based of health.
This too is why rares are nice...
many are not health based, rather they focus on a unit.
plus of course the wayfare works during a dragon attack...
Same for the dragon staff...
its summon dragon cannot be countered, and then you roll again,
plus its ID can be used to cast any same colored racial spell.
plus plus plus for those greedy algorithm players.
I like the bash SAI...
secondary and I really think that crush is fantastic, as it's really the only SAI that can bury on artifacts or rares.
So for a missile army...the trebuchet is KING. |
