DEXCON 16 is scheduled for July 3 - 7, 2013, at the Hyatt in Morristown, NJ.

DEXCON XVI registration options:
$60.00 Complete Membership (entitles you to play in all events, tournaments and LARPs available at DEXCON 16)
$50.00 Weekend Membership (entitles you to play in all events, tournaments and LARPs available at DEXCON 16 from Friday 8:00PM to Sunday 7:00PM)

There are no fees associated with any DEXCON XV event (except "sealed deck" events). DEXCON XV features a "Con Suite" that is open to all attendees most of the day and evening, offering free soft drinks, chips, and cookies.

The proposed list of the SFR-sponsored events is as follows:

C00S1: The “Constructed Starter” Dragon Diceâ„¢ Campaign is a convention-long special event. Players may pre-register as with any other DEXCON event or sign up on the “Big Board” at the convention itself, and then show up anytime at the SFR booth in the hotel lobby for the event materials.

Each player in the “Campaign” must bring a 36-health army composed of exactly two races. Each of the two races must be 18-health and include 1 x monster, 1 x Rare, 3 x Uncommon (all different), and 5 x common dice (one of each), 4 x basic terrains (up to one Coastland, up to one Feyland, up to one Flatland, up to one Highland, up to one Swampland, up to one Wasteland), and 2 x dragons (either black, blue, green, red, yellow, or ivory) as is typically present in a 2-player starter set. The event materials each player receives will include a roster sheet to record your “constructed starter” army, a sticker to wear on your shirt or badge to identify you as a participant in the “Campaign”, and record sheets for each “encounter” with another player in the “Campaign”.

Players in the “Campaign” may play against any other participant or any of the SFR staff at any time during the convention. Games can be played anywhere, but the most convenient location will be at the hotel lobby (especially if players want a referee available to resolve any questions). Results of each “encounter” are recorded on an “encounter sheet” to earn campaign points.

Prizes are awarded based on points earned for playing different opponents, as well as the outcome of each “encounter”. How well the races fare in the “Campaign” will also be recorded, with a special bonus prize awarded to players that have the race that did the best overall.

DEXCON 16 Post-Convention Report
DEXCON 16 was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Morristown from July 3-7, 2013. Total number of attendees for DREAMATION was estimated at 1600-1800.

Dragon Diceâ„¢ Event Results:

C0410: Dragon Diceâ„¢ Novice Tournament event winner: George Bracey

C0452: Dragon Diceâ„¢: Campaigns of Esfah: The winning team in this 4-player event were Michael Schuller and Steve Braun.

C0478: 1st Qualifier Round - Constructed Starter Event winner: Robert Braun with a Feral/Goblin army

C0546: 2nd Qualifier Round - Constructed Starter Event winner: Jonathan Braun with a CoralElf/Frostwing army

C0563: Dragon Diceâ„¢ Novice Tournament event winner: Sean Badurina

C0597: 3rd Qualifier Round - Constructed Army Event winner: Steve Braun with a Dwarf army.
I need to add a footnote to this event about the match between Steve Braun and Robert Braun: Steve had been exhibiting a disturbing trend of not rolling any saves (although his magicians performed yeoman service), and at one point, Steve announced that since his army would not roll saves, he was going to lose the game as fast as possible. Robert responded to this statement immediately with a “No!” and proceeded to figure out ways to keep Steve’s army alive, which then turned into a race to see which player could lose their army first. Steve summoned Dragons on his own army, and as the Dwarves prostrated themselves to await whatever fate the dragons would deliver, Robert cast Open Grave on Steve’s army (which is quite legal, as it says it can target any army). This turned out to be quite an interesting challenge for both players, but Steve ultimately succeeded in his goal for that round.

C0617: Dragon Diceâ„¢ Novice Tournament event winner: Michael Belmont

C0649: 4th Qualifier Round - Single Race Event winner: Jared Schuller with Amazons. Since Jared qualified for the US National Championship as the Regional Champion at DREAMATION 2013, Stephanie Braun was the next player to qualify.

C0651: Dragon Diceâ„¢™ Novice Tournament – No attendees.

C0730: 5th Qualifier Round - Sealed Box Event winner: Robert Braun with Feral/Undead.

C0752: Dragon Diceâ„¢ Novice Tournament event winner: Amy McCarthy

C0787: 6th Qualifier Round – BattleFest was changed to a Sealed Box Event by unanimous vote by participants, and the winner was Brian Gilbert with Feral/Undead.

C0806: Dragon Diceâ„¢ Novice Tournament event winner: Jeffrey Engelstein

C0845: The 2013 U.S. National Dragon Diceâ„¢ Championship - Final Round. Although six players had qualified, only 4 attended for the final round. They had the choice of event format, half wanted Sealed Starter, one BattleFest and one Constructed. The negotiations almost came to a unanimous decision, but a consensus was not reached, so the default format was Constructed. Robert Braun emerged victorious to claim the U.S. National Championship once again with a ½ Feral / ½ Goblin army, featuring Leopard Riders, Trolls, and Feral magicians to deliver Lightning Strikes.

C0851: Dragon Diceâ„¢ Novice Tournament event winner: Rafael Shaul

C0852: Dragon Diceâ„¢: Campaigns of Esfah – This 6-player event resulted in a draw after 3 hours.

C0945: Dragon Diceâ„¢ Novice Tournament event winner: Matt Schoellkopf

C0946: Dragon Diceâ„¢: Campaigns of Esfah – This 3-player event resulted in a draw after 3 hours. Victory conditions were to control 9 of 18 territories. Very tough to accomplish in a multi-player game, but two players had a shot – but could not win all the battles necessary to control 9 territories.

I sense that a new format has been born! Oh, how I wish I could have witnessed this most excellent and glorious creation...! Mr. Green

Well, after that particular game, there was a "round table" discussion about such an event. While the Brauns were discussing a "design to lose" construction, I suggested a format where you bring an army that your opponent would play...

It started with my frustration at my stupid dwarves inability to roll saves (which had been a recurring problem through multiple events, despite the fact that they weren't deficient in saves), but I have to say I don't think I have ever played a game that was just plain as much fun as that one. Robert is an excellent player, and the tactical challenges were unique, so that we were both scrambling to find rules loopholes to jump through. It required some real outside-the-box thinking, since it probably has never occurred to two players to simultaneously try to lose the same game.

We did this at Gencon... was it last year? I didn't play, but I designed the army for MissTiffany to play. She won the tournament with that army, but man did it piss off everyone that was required to roll it. They couldn't maneuver, they couldn't do any damage, all they could do is save.

So while I had a lot of fun watching them play. It was frustrating for the individual players.

I recommend putting some construction rules into such an event in the future. All shield bearers just isn't fair in this format.

Wasn't the object of GenCon to win the game, though? You just built a crappy army to keep your opponent from winning. This is building a good army, then deliberately trying to lose with it (or trying to lose with a great army built by your opponent).

ah, I see the distinction... your opponent won't capture two 8th's so all you can do is cause yourself damage?

Only a handful of ways to do that.
