Quote:
Rend: Normal (maneuver); Instant Normal (melee)
During a maneuver roll, each Rend result generates one maneuver result. During a melee attack or melee avoidance roll, each Rend result generates one melee result; roll this unit again and apply the new result as well.

Note the sentence says that "During a melee attack or melee avoidance roll....". It's saying that for a melee avoidance roll, it generates melee and you reroll. But, now I'm wondering if you are asking the wrong question. There is currently only one melee avoidance roll in the game, that's when you are rolling to avoid the damage of a Wall of Thorns spell. Only melee results count, saves do nothing to avoid the damage from that spell. If you are talking about the save roll after your army has been attacked by another army during a melee action, that is not a melee avoidance roll, that is a save roll. During a save roll, Rend does nothing, and is not rerolled. Only Counter gives you saves and damage back against an army, that's it's special.

That's what it was. I was (for some reason) thinking a save roll and melee avoidance roll were the same. That answers it for me. Thanks very much.

As a side note, would "Web" count for a melee avoidance roll?

Yes, Web is a melee avoidance roll.

Hi. I've got a couple more questions.

With Ash Storm, say, it's a 4 player game, and 3 Ash Storms are cast on 1 terrain. Does the caster choose what they go toward? Are they locked on that choice, or does it change depending on what is being rolled for?
I assume it affects everyone at the terrain.

Any suggestions for dice, and or spell combinations that negate an opponents magic fairly well?

Thanks!

No, the army's owner decides which results get penalized.

So, I may be being a bit dense here, but wouldn't it naturally go for melee if I'm rolling for melee, magic for magic, etc?

I'm pretty sure you can't designate the penalty toward something you're not rolling for. I could see it being a free choice for a combination roll.

Thanks for your patience while I attempt to comprehend this. =]

You are correct. The penalty must be taken off something that the army is rolling for. In something like a dragon attack where you are rolling for multiple results at once, you can take it off any of the results or split it anyway you wish.

It can get even weirder when playing a race that can convert maneuvers to saves or the like. So when you are rolling for saves, you can only apply penalties like Ash Storm to your save results. So you might have the situation like this:

The Coastland terrain has 4 Ash Storms cast on it. Your Coral Elf army at that terrain must roll for saves. You get 3 actual saves (save icons or IDs) and 6 maneuvers. So you end up with 6 saves. How? The rules never allow a result to go below zero. Since you first subtract, your saves go from 3 to -1, which gets adjusted to zero. Assuming nothing to divide or multiply, your next step is to convert via your racial ability, so those 6 maneuvers become 6 saves. Assuming nothing to add, your final result is 6 saves.

Chuck, that situation actually popped up last night. I'm glad we played it out correctly. =]

Another question popped up, now that I've acquired some White Dragons.

The rules state:
White Dragon Breath (Terrain Empathy): Inflict as many breaths as the terrain has colors. Each breath is the same as one of the terrain colors.

Now, are the deaths from the breath counted for each breath? (ex. 2 breaths = 10 damage + status effects for each breath?) Or is it 5 damage + status effects for each breath?

Thanks in advance!

Each breath resolves separately.

So it is 5 damage per color that the terrain has (yes, there is ONE way to get all five colors for maximum damage, but it's hard to pull off)

White dragon rolls breath at a Flatland that has Call Water, Create Mountain, and Deadlands all cast on it.
