This may have been discussed before but I couldn't find if it had and was very curious about a discussion that was made when the special terrain dice were made.

For all Major Terrain dice (even the new wasteland and Feyland) its the TYPE OF TERRAIN that dictates what the side distribution is. That makes sense. Coast land is coast land no matter what the 8th face is and should have the most missile sides (4) as its very open and unobstructed, missile range should be the longest here.

But then you reversed this for the special frontier terrains where the 8th face, NOT the type of terrain, dictates the side distribution. So every dragon lair has only one missile side no matter what the type of terrain it exists on. In fact three of the specials have only one missile side, one has 3 missiles.

I was just curious what prompted this decision. I can see this bringing more of a challenge to some players who have relied on the consistency of the terrain type. Example: a missile heavy coral elf army would want a coast land home terrain to take full advantage of their racial ability and to have plenty of sides for their missile attacks but would seem vastly less effective at a cost land special for the frontier except maybe the vortex since the other three only have 1 missile side.

I would say that it's the opposite of this. it's the flexibility that is introduced to remove the constraint of the terrain type. Thus allowing you to play a certain race with a certain terrain type, but to have a different distribution available.

Partially costs (the special terrains are only one mold, not 6 molds), and partially game design. The game design goal was to not only fill in all the terrain color combinations (ignoring ivory and black) and also all the distributions of action icons. The constraints on the action icons was as follows:
  • Each terrain had at least one of each action icon (magic, missile, melee).
  • Magic was on the lower numbers, missile on the middle numbers, and melee on the higher numbers.
  • All terrains had magic on 1, and melee on 6.
So given those constraints, you can see that there are 10 possible patterns:
TypeMagicMissileMelee
Dragon Lair123-7
Wasteland12-34-7
Flatland12-45-7
Coastland12-56-7
Castle1-234-7
Swampland1-23-45-7
Vortex1-23-56-7
Feyland1-345-7
Highland1-34-56-7
Grove1-456-7

I am currently learning how to play how to play Dragon Dice™™ in Brazil with two other friends. So far we have three Battle Boxes, two TSR starter sets, an Amazons & Monsters and a Firewalkers kicker pack to split amongst ourselves and learn how to play the game (an Undead vs. Feral starter is also currently migrating to the South)
