Dragon Dice™: Campaigns of Esfah. This event went the full time limit with each side gaining a slight majority of territories, but neither fulfilling the victory conditions (control 11 of 16 territories at the start of the turn). At the end of play, the team of Kim Newton & Dan Burkley (Goblins & Frostwings) had 10 of 16 territories vs Steve & Stephanie Braun (Dwarves and Coral Elves).

Saturday
The 2017 U.S. National Dragon Dice™ Championship: Sealed Starter. Stephanie Braun qualified with an army of Amazons and Swampstalkers.
Dragon Dice™ Novice Tournament. Jacob Zdepski won this event with a Goblin army.

The 2017 U.S. National Dragon Dice™ Championship: Battlefest! Russ Lockwood qualified with an army of Dwarves, Lava Elves, and Eldarim.
Dragon Dice™ Novice Tournament. James Griffin won this event with a Treefolk army.

Daemon Dice™ Novice Tournament. Eric Rockind won this event.

The 2017 U.S. National Dragon Dice™ Championship. The format used was Constructed Army. Jared Schuller won this event with an army of Firewalkers, Scalders, and Eldarim.

Although 4 players qualified, Russ Lockwood did not compete in the final event. A round-robin format was used, and the player with the ‘bye’ played against Dan Burkley (which did not count in the final scoring).

Jared defeated Ed Miles Frostwing army in the first round. Stephanie Braun’s Coral Elf army put up a stiff fight before losing a battle of attrition against Dan Burkley’s conglomeration of Goblins, Eldarim, Firewalker, Lava Elf, Swampstalker, and Treefolk. Stephanie used her minor Coastland terrain to good effect to gain double maneuvers and maximize the Coral Elf racial ability. Daniel countered this by casting Transmute Rock to Mud at the terrain, eliminating the non-SAI maneuvers before they could be doubled.

In the second round, Jared narrowly won against Stephanie by bold maneuvering to take two 8th Faces with only 3 units left in his army after losing most to Lightning Strikes. Both players had the opportunity to suddenly win in the last two turns of the games: Jared held a Coastland Dragon Lair at the Frontier, while Stephanie held a Coastland City. Jared pushed the Wasteland Standing Stones with a single unit each turn until it reached 7 and Terrain Flighted a Firewalker unit to join the 1-point unit (which was all he could spare, as he was down to just 3 units left of 7-health total). Stephanie saw this move coming and moved three units to reserve and then to the Wasteland terrain to contest, while casting a Lightning Strike at Jared’s remaining unit at the Dragon Lair (with 3 summoned Dragonkin). Jared made the save! Stephanie tried to take the Wasteland, but Jared beat the maneuver attempt. Then Jared tried to take the Wasteland in his turn, and made a 3-maneuver roll. Stephanie had the dice to beat it, but did not make the roll, so Jared held two 8th Faces for the win.

Ed Miles played Dan Burkley during his ‘bye’ round and started off with terrain rolls of 5, 6, 6, which his Frostwings were not prepared for. Most games that start with terrains at those levels don’t last too long, and this was no exception.

In the third round, Stephanie’s Elves defeated Ed’s Frostwings in a fairly short match, effectively using minor terrains to double maneuver results at her Coastland terrains to maximize the Coral Elf racial ability, allowing her to take the Frostwing missile barrages with minimal damage.

During Jared’s ‘bye’ round, he played against Dan Burkley’s army and pulled off a similar feat to his previous round. Jared won the initiative and chose his Coastland Dragon Lair. The terrains started 6-4-6.

Both sides starting off with some strong melee attacks at both Home terrains with both sides losing units.

Each side withdrew from the other’s Home terrain, allowing each player to capture their Home terrain. This left the Coastland Dragon Lair left at the Frontier to contest. Both sides committed units to contest the Frontier.

Dan managed to recover his units quicker than Jared. Both sides summon Dragonkin to their Home terrains and Jared launches an occasional Lightning Strike (with success every time). Soon after, Dan would get the dead unit back with a Gold Medallion TSR result. Jared commits a larger army to the Frontier (5 units), daring Dan to attack him while Jared had a Charkin, two Expeditioners, and 2 Fireshadows waiting to roll Counter SAIs, but this only leaves the 1-point Firestarter at his home with the Dragonkin.

Dan didn’t flinch and waded right into melee, getting a roll of 4 Smites and no normal damage – so Jared couldn’t do a save roll. Jared’s counterattack did damage, but Dan managed to save against it. Next turn, Jared advances the terrain, beating Dan’s counter-maneuver roll. The attack kills a mage, but it comes back during the counterattack, thanks to the Troll. Dan tried to advance it to no effect, but attacks, getting a similar result: 4 Smites & two Cantrips, but no normal damage. Dan uses one Cantrip to pick off the Firestarter at Jared’s Home, eliminating the Dragonkin and dropping the face to 7. Dan avoids the temptation to being in a unit by Path, or summon a Dragonkin, because he doesn’t want to risk generating normal damage with the new die brought in, so he casts Stoneskins instead. Jared doesn’t get a save roll (again).

Jared now has only 3 units at the Coastland (9-health) vs Dan’s 4 units (13 health) and the face is at 6. He holds still at the Frontier and uses Terrain Flight to move an Expeditioner to the Wasteland Home. Dan whiffs his next Magic roll with his army at the Home terrain with only 4 Goblin magic which he used to cast 2 Stoneskins at the Frontier army, so the army at the Frontier is on its own. It gets 4 maneuver results, and Jared comes up with 3, so it goes to 7. Dan attacks again, doing some damage, but Jared saves against it with a Counter SAI. The Stoneskins give enough protection to negate Jared’s Counter SAI to just 2 damage, which is ineffective – since Dan has only 3-health and 4-health units present.

Now it’s Jared’s turn. Jared reclaims his Wasteland 8th Face. Jared’s magic at the Home terrain is insignificant, so now it’s up to the Frontier army to perform. They roll 3 results during the Maneuver Roll. Dan generates 0 maneuvers, so Jared takes two terrains for the win.

Jared won all his matches and reclaimed his US title, well played, and well deserved.

Jared Schuller’s Championship Army:
1 x Dragonlord (Eldarim Champion)
1 x Charkin (Scalder)
1 x Dragonne Knight (Scalder)
1 x Will O’Wisp (Scalder monster)
1 x Daybringer (Firewalker)
2 x Expeditioner (Firewalker)
2 x Fireshadow (Firewalker monster)
1 x Firestarter (Firewalker)
1 x Gold Medallion

Summoning Pool
1 x Blue/Red Hybrid Drake
1 x Blue/Red Hybrid Wyrm
12 health of Red Dragonkin

I had an opportunity to play last year's US title holder, Jonathan Braun, on Sunday. Jon's middle name might as well be "Frostwings", as that is all he plays (but he plays them well). This was our first one-on-one match.

I won the initiative and chose my terrain. The rolls came out 1-4-6, which was unfortunate for Jon. He tried to make a stand at his home with his "Missile" army, but he couldn't move it down from 6 and the Goblin Conglomeration rolled in with 21 damage, which caused a loss of 8 health.

I was able to move units often by Teleport, Wayfare, and Path to get to the Frontier and get that to a melee face quickly, and I managed to get a local superiority, or to get some double-duty out of the mages. Jon always had to deal with a magic face or a melee face. He eventually had to come to melee, but the Goblin Conglomeration outfought him. With a "win or die" attitude, the Frostwings gave it their best, but it wasn't enough - this time. It could have easily been different, had the terrains been more favorable at the start.
