not a problem. I'm here to teach, this is not the simplest of games, but once you get over the learning curve there is a lot of options and not all are statistics based.

This isn't a melee roll, so not rolling the burning hands ones separately.

Saving against 20:
Infiltrator - 5 Maneuver

First the cantrip resolves: Finger of Death against a Sparker.

then I count my results:
5+5+3+2+2 = 17 maneuvers
2+2+2= 6 saves

I have no subtracting modifiers,
no dividing,
no multiplying,
I count my maneuvers as saves because of my racial, so it is now 23 saves.
no adding modifiers.

So I saved it all.

any reserves?

Yes, it would be two different rolls.

You get to declare the order the spells resolve in. As they resolve they each require a roll.

which in this case would be two chances to roll those cantrips.

okay in that case going to just do 20 firestorm to the terrain.

i was just wanting to make sure i wasn't missing anything.

I think one big disadvantage scalders have is no unit direct damage spell all of them are terrain or army only.

and thus the lesson is learned. They also have no burying spells. That's why I don't play just scalders magic. but I love some of their other units.

BTW - if you missed it, I did post a save roll and I saved all of it.

nice roll and no just going to leave them there.

I was debating on cutting your maneuvers in 1/2 but decided to gamble since unless you get 9 or more maneuvers the damage breaks even or was higher.

I play Lava elves normally and the army you are using pretty much is a mirror or what i run. Only difference is i don't have 6 necromancers to field so i am doing 2 necromancers, 3 warlocks and 6 adepts.

Was thinking of building a feral or undead army but those kickers are out of print at the moment.

question on a few things to make sure i understand them a bit.

if a cantrip is used to say cast Deadlands on the the magic roll i am under the belief that i still wouldn't double magic for black since the Deadlands was done after the roll.

Also when casting Finger of death since no save is available the unit doesn't get a chance to roll unlike with Firebolt where it still allows a save roll so sai's can still go off the exception is unless the sai allows it to be rolled anyways such as with dispell magic. SAI like rise from the ashes would be rolled once it is killed so that wouldn't be a save but an attempt to not go to the dua.

I tend to min/max, but a lot of times I'll bring only a few necromancers as well or sometimes I play all commons.

In a magic roll, cantrip is just normal magic results. So it doesn't have it's 'instant' effect, it is normal magic cast at the same time as all other magic. So it wouldn't double.

Sounds like you got it right! A lot of times my necromancers will cast a final spell as they die.

a minor point to notice is that Finger of Death targets a unit, while Firebolt targets an army. A lot of times it doesn't matter, but occasionally the distinction is important (like the Earthen Armor Spell or trying to path the unit away via a cantrip)

Yeah the dwarves has a nice spell to counter the direct unit spells and at 2 magic it gives them a solid strong option to go with for bumping units to go against other armies.

Earthen Armor I would have to say for cost has got to be the best defense spell in the game. Since it is only 2 magic and stays on the unit till used unlke so many other spells that go away during the next turn.

Also it's your move i have a feeling though it will be just move the terrain to a 7 an end it.

Cliff thanks to your help so far with helping me learn this game i just won the first constructed tournament i entered into.

32 point army build

ran:

3x infiltrator
3x scorpion knights
1x spider army

5x necromancer
1x Adept

2 highland territories (temple and standing stones)

1 red drake
1 red wyrm

was a small tourney though only 6 people showed so fought 3 matches only.

1st vs Feral
2nd vs Coral Elf/Frost Wind
3rd vs Undead

The undead was the only one who managed to get any units sent to my dua thanks to Open Graves. He killed both commons with finger and i brought them back at the start of my first Action.

Undead are like the herpies of this game you keep killing them they keep coming back.

(2*3+3+3)+1+4+3+3+3+1+1 = 34 (not 36)

sorry about that i think i counted the save. Sure firestorm for one less. I also doubt i will ever see a magic roll like that again.

Tournament is tonight also at my local game shop 3rd Dragon Diceâ„¢ one this they started it so i have to see if i can keep my streak up of winning them.
