I've decided the King's die is a myth. I've never seen it used in competition since routing was removed.

I wasn't there, so I've decided that Gencon 2006 was a myth too. :-p

Actually I got Variations 2 and 3. Cool

But it's really strange that it is used so seldomly. Probably to most players it's not worth losing 4 health of total army size for what it can actually do.

I think I should start an experiment, playing a 5-races-army (basic races!) and using a King's die with it???
Sounds promising since you can get back or promote units in EVERY roll, as long as you have lost any before.

Hmmmm.............

...........very interesting idea! Cool

You can only promote units that are in the reserves.

Yes, you're right!

What I meant was: I can promote and recruit units after EVERY roll of the King since I have all 5 races available!
This was just to point out that - if you play with ONE race only - there will be lots of chances that you roll the King and it shows a race you don't play.

Of course you can promote units in reserves only, but even for promotion you need units in your DUA (promotion = exchanging a unit with a unit from your DUA with one health more, respectively any health more if it's a King-induced promotion).

I was just referring to what I said before:
Considering what a King can do, lots of players might not consider it worth losing 4 health of total army size, just to bring a King's Die to the game.
In my example it might work better since all 5 races are in one army. Hence: no matter whatcha roll, the chances are higher to really be able to use the King's roll.

Well, I'm gonna check it out in one of my next games! Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes

so you are assuming you will have dead from all 5 races at any given time? which means you are assuming you will be losing? which means why play at all?

Design to win, don't design around losing.

This seems to be leaning towards a Kings' die discussion....
so I'll contribute....

I made an army Using a Kings' die with 3 original races...
the Key was to use only uncommons.
This way you were forced to roll the Kings' Die.
As promote was out of the equation,
and if you hit the SFR/TSR you would get 4 health.
Otherwise 2 health if King icon. (If a mixed race DUA)

No, but I'm prepared to have losses which have to be restored (instead of using medallions or Trolls)

I have built a five race army but probably won't get to play it since I just lost my playing partner. Sad

Was this just a give away or was it a prize winning? I have one but I do not remember where I got it from.

Some may have been given out as prizes later, but the bulk of them where given away at GenCon 1996 in the "swag" bag.

The king's die is bizarre. According to the rules, it's a unit, but it doesn't do anything that a unit does other than cost health to include in your force; it would make far more sense if they just said it isn't a unit but costs 4 health to include in your force.

And it lets you recruit a die of any size or promote a die by any amount - so why would you ever promote? If I'm allowed to recruit a Gryphon, why would I promote my Coral Elf to a Gryphon instead? I must be missing something here.

If you roll the Kings' Die, then you can recruit any size unit and/or promote units multiple steps (of the race rolled (except the logo face which allows you to recruit/promote any race)).

If you don't roll it, you can only recruit a common or promote to a unit of one health more.

So the question becomes: do you take the guaranteed one health revived, or do you roll it and risk getting either no health back or up to four health back?

Say you have an 1h Mage and 2h Mage, but you really want a certain 4h Monster and your 3h mage. You risk it and roll the King's Die... and get the right race!!!

So now you can promote the 1h by 2 to get the 3h mage (using 2h-worth)
AND you can promote the 2h by 2 to get the 4h monster (using 2h-worth)

THAT is one scenario where you might want to promote. You still only get 4h worth, but now you have the monster you wanted and basically converted your lower health mages into a higher one (both to get the Cantrip AND make it easier to revive the smaller units as 3 Breath/Spark of Life's can be hard to swing at one time)

Multiple Kings:

OK here's a neat thing I though of for Battlefest format

Let's say you use 3 Kings' dice:
and had a common and uncommon in the DUA

First you could recruit 1 common

next...
you take that common and promote it to an uncommon...

then with the third king...
you recruit the common

there are a number of loops that could be made...
including rolling the first King...
and promoting the commons.
