Ok, this discussion has stalled to a halt. So far we've got:

Dice from a 2-player starter (maybe only one?)

No racial abilities.

Dragons have ivory breath and are colorless.

Colorless magic (racial like the demo rules???)

SAIs the same as the main rules, but only a subset due to being a subset of the dice.

Suggested starting layout for the dice to make for a faster start and game.

Anything else?

Once the winner has been declared, they should also be informed that they are no longer a Novice.
This would be a great honor for a new player.

Very Happy

Dice from a 2-player starter split between two players.

18-health armies, all one race.

No racial abilities.

Dragons have ivory breath and are colorless.

Only subset of basic spells, colorless magic with races assigned spells.

SAIs the same as the main rules, but only a subset due to being a subset of the dice.

Suggested starting layout for the dice to make for a faster start and game. Terrains would be assigned by race and position.

I'm going to put together a "cheat sheet", and rules subset based on this soon (perhaps over Thanksgiving). Jim, I think we have plenty of comments from you at this point. I'd like to hear from other people about what they think.

Have you thought about one simple optional rule, which prevents an annoying tournament (a la Canadian)? Especially new players do not know what you can do against someone, who moves all his units into one huge army.

I would remove the doubling of magic too. (= one rule less to remember)

The biggest problems I had when playing with newbies was when it came to magic!

So I really like the idea of colorless magic at the beginning.

Leaving out the doubling of ID magic???

The question is then: with an 18 health army, will they ever be able to summon a dragon???
They're playing with starter packs which are not put together by following the 50% mages rule. Probably there's only very few mages in such an army (if at all!!) so they have to entirely rely on IDs!

If we don't allow them to double IDs for magic, they probably NEVER get enough magic points for the more expensive spells.

And summoning a dragon is a MUST in Dragon Dice!! You can't leave it out of the game.

Therefore I think we should keep the doubling of magic in. Since it's colorless it should be easy enough to handle!

This all looks good. My only comment is the same one I made before about assigning spells to races, but since this is just novice it's not a big deal...

make it so.

Actually, in addition to the rules we should produce a tip sheet for demo runners on how to rig a demo without it looking like you rigged it. It's really quite easy if you have preset terrain faces. I seldom have a problem with a new player demoing the game having to face my Canadian army...

The Novice Layout Sheet:

Brad has setup a design for a novice layout sheet.
It would be easy for Illustrator to create the rounded boxes he has chosen for the design.
Illustrator can create not only rounded boxes, but the border thickness can be adjusted as well.
The process would be to scan the original,
and then overlay the graphics and text.
I only suggest this as I feel that Illustrator would be perfect for this project.

I suggest an 11x 17 project, so that it can be printed inexpensively on a Laser Jet Color wax pellet printer. Wax pellets won't bleed like ink tends to do if it gets wet.

Well, gee, Jim, now that all the icons are done, you need a new project right? Very Happy

I've got the entire Adobe master set CS3. So I'd have no trouble with anything you want to put together. If you want to start it, and have me finish it up, that's fine.

It's up to Brad,
if he wants to,
bring the layout to the next Windy meeting,
and I'll scan it and create the overlay from his existing work in Illustrator.

I had the days mixed up, so I went to the windy city meeting last week.
Oopps sorry.

Another Novice idea.

Colored Glass Stones:
Red=ash storm
gold=stoneskin
Green=watery double
black=palsy
Blue=wind walk

using basic colored stones is fast and simple.
I found that when just playing basic spells,
people actually did not mind using the glass stones.

Under the spell description for "Summon Dragon" it only mentions gold and ivory dragons.

I'll try out these demo rules this weekend.

All of the boxes should be the same size except the summoning pool.

Regarding the layout:
(a) Instead of Campaign, it should say Campaign Army.
(b) Move the reserve army over - the right edge of the reserve army should line up with the right edge of the horde army. That will leave a little more room to make the summoning pool a bit bigger.
(c) The turn sequence will need a step G (spell and effect expiration) if they use spells like Watery Double.
(d) The circles encasing the letters in the turn sequence would look better if they were a little smaller.

here is a list of the changes....

I was also wondering...
sould the SFR logo be on the layout somewhere...?
since it will be in color

In the current demo rules posted on the web site, there is no 8th face icon for Standing Stones.

Also Chuck, is the PDF up yet? I could try it out this weekend.
