I thought about this a long time.
I red this in a book the other day:
The magician concentrated on a spell, summing up his mental strength to set free the power of magic and use it to cast a spell.
He got disturbed in his concentration right at the moment he wanted to cast the spell and he wasn't able to get his concentration back in time. The spell needed a certain level of magic power to be cast but since the magician lost his concentration in that very moment, the powers were set free but not put into the spell. The magician got mentally hurt by his own powers.
In reference to an RPG/fantasy game like DD this would mean:
Every point of magic which has been created but not used up should reflect damage to the casting unit (makes sense).
The unit gets a roll for ID (means: summing up all his mental strength to absorb the magic again).
If it's a Cantrip which created the magic points, no save roll can be rolled, since a Cantrip can be considered a SUDDEN, LESS CONTROLLED outburst of magic powers.
HENCE: if you let magic points fizzle or can't completely use them up, you have to sacrifice magicians up to that many health points if they can't roll an ID! EXAMPLE: In a Goblin army 3 points of magic fizzle. You have a Trickster, a Hedge Wizard and a Death Mage in your army. You can either choose the common and Uncommon to have them roll for an ID, or you can choose the rare alone to roll for ID.
WHAT'S YOUR OPINION ABOUT THIS OPTION??? _________________

Making players have to figure out how to use every single point of magic or take damage will slow down even more the slowest part of the game. _________________ You can never have too many dice.
