Thank you, Cliff, for the game - and the invitation. I apologize for the slow and painful game of attrition, but I didn't see any other option with finesse or flare that had any significant chance of working.
With the way the terrains came out, had pi Master had the fortune of gaining an 8th face as early as Cliff or I - in my opinion, his army would have been most favored to win. He had 18-health of magicians (vs 8-13 health among the other players) and magic-casting was a dominant feature of this game. I viewed Brad's army as the greater threat early on (especially after I looked up his spell arsenal and realized the potential it could have vs my army). Summoning dragons was a cost-effective way of wearing away opponents, and hampering opponents' opportunities to cast magic minimized any "pay-back". Getting some ID icons during each magic roll helped quite a bit, so I was fortunate to get more "good" rolls than "bad" (although any roll can be a "good" roll, depending on the circumstances).
This was a great way to learn how to use magic and clarify a number of game mechanics. The "Trifecta" army criteria was a different and interesting army design restriction. No army was perfect, but I saw some "rock-paper-scissors" advantages in magic capabilities with each 3-color combo.
Thank you for the game proposal and invitation, Cliff. I hope to have the opportunity to play with you all again. Has there ever been a game using a "team" format? _________________ Daniel Burkley

There was a team tournament at GenCon. However, people lost interest in it, so we dropped it. It really almost became a new game in it's own right. If you want to talk more about it, start a thread in the Game Variations forum. _________________ You can never have too many dice.

Congratulations Dan!!
In fact, I was very surprised about the magical power of your army.
Well done!!
Unfortunately my army never came up at least once with the wished combo Wilding spell by Cantrip/Trumpet by Elephant/melee damage by several re-rolled Wolfpack IDs or Rends!!
I would have liked to see that because THAT was the strategy my army was based upon...heavy melee damage in ONE roll!
Of course, if you take a look at the odds of getting such a roll one can immediately see, that this is a very weak strategy to base your army construction on. But heck....I just wanted to give it a try.
Biggest draw back was the missing medallion. An army consisting of almost nothing but monsters is very heavily stopped by any burial and there was no way to get back my lost Wolfpacks.
I only had one really good roll but that was during a missile action, so it didn't count!
Anyhow, I liked this game. With restrictions in army construction like the "Trifecta" restriction you have to think very thoroughly how to combine your colors and which units to choose. It's not even near the simplicity as it looks at first sight!
I definitely underestimated it!

I'll take gold, blue, black!! |
So Dee is playing Feral, Frostwing, Goblin... a nice combination. I know how I would divide my units |
@CLIFF:
Now I'd like to know YOUR idea of unit combination 'cause I think it was different from mine?
What was YOUR first idea when you saw my colors??
Take your time, I know you're in stress/grind _________________

Just don't get too used to them. they can also be UNcosteffective. I've wasted a hundred points of magic on dragons who just bellied up and died before when if I'd spent that same magic on fingers I would've won. _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |
