COLD WARS 2009 is an HMGS convention (HMGS = Historical Miniatures Gaming Society) and one of three conventions organized by HMGS East each year. All three are miniatures conventions (mostly historical miniatures, but some fantasy and sci-fi gaming can be found as well).
HMGS does not sanction any non-miniatures event, so you will never see any boardgame or collectable card game events officially listed at their convention website or program book. That does not stop gamers from bringing them and playing them at these conventions in the "open gaming" areas.
I will be at COLD WARS 2009, which will be at the Lancaster Host Resort in Lancaster, PA. I'll run some Dragon Dice events for those who wish to play at 7 PM on Saturday, March 14th (whether it be Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Scenarios, or the boardgame I developed last year). I know of two gamers that play Dragon Dice and will be at this convention, so I know I won't be alone on Saturday night...
COLD WARS gaming events start Thursday evening, but the convention itself is a 3-day show that starts on Friday. There is a dealer area in the Expo Center that is set up in an indoor tennis court with about 50 dealers, ranging from books, boardgames, dice, magazines, miniatures, models, movies, terrain, paint, painting services, prints, rules, and T-shirts. They have a website that fully describes what its all about. Attendence is normally 2000+.
So if you're a minatures gamer that's planning to go, pack some Dragon Dice with those miniatures (but if you forget, I'll have some available). If you're curious and close enough for a day trip, check it out and we'll roll some dice. I'll be at the On Military Matters booth in the Expo Center during the day, but I'll be wearing my SFR shirt on Saturday Night in the Exhibit Hall (which is left of the Hotel main entrance). After entering the Exhibit Hall from the lobby, and descending the stairs, look to the left side of the hall. _________________ Daniel Burkley

I love doing historical mini (HMGS-GL member) at conventions. I've never made it to Cold Wars, but now it's even more tempting.
Ancients and DD in the same place - nice!
Kudos for running some Dragon Dice there. |

I will have some new players attending COLD WARS. From contacts that I've made, I may have as many as 6 new players and 2-3 that have some prior Dragon Dice experience. I will have a basic/intermediate level scenario for the newer players to introduce them to the game:
Dragon Dice™ “Regiments”: Players field a “single race” 36-health army divided into three 12-health “Regiments”, plus two different terrains and a dragon. Each 12-health Regiment must consist of 1 rare, 2 uncommon, and 5 common units (8 dice). No monsters, Magestorm or promo dice! There is a “health limit” at each of the terrains and the Reserve: No more than 12-health worth of dice can be at a terrain or in the Reserve.
I have four mapboards (from the "Battle Box"), 8 different pre-made armies, and customized "cheat sheets" for each of the armies for the newer players to use for this scenario. _________________ Daniel Burkley

On Friday night, I had 5 players (4 of which were new) to play the "Regiments" scenario:
Sean Driscoll
John Fischer
Russ Lockwood
Jeff Reichert
Penny Reichert
I filled the 6th slot to permit 3 games per round.
Games were played using Intermediate rules. The new players picked up the mechanics quickly, but needed the most time with the magic options. Most games turned out to be very close affairs, with both sides having opportunities to win the game on their last turns. Only 2 rounds were played, due to time constraints with several players.
Sean Driscoll and Penny Reichert emerged undefeated after 2 rounds.
On Saturday, the same players arrived (later than scheduled), but only two had the time to play out a full game. (3 players wanted to leave early to get a head start on their trips back home.) This effectively left Sean Driscoll as the winner after 3 rounds.
I'll try a similar format at the HISTORICON convention in July... _________________ Daniel Burkley
