Ashes to Ashes costs 2 magic while Spark of Life is 3 magic. He could double some but I couldn't, and he has more dice to roll. In the end the "big melee" would have been at his home, on his preferred terrain, with him at the 8th face. It was a foregone conclusion.

a lot of assumptions that he would remember to bury, would pick his terrain to run up, etc.
One thing I've learned is that many things in this game are 'likely' but nothing is done until it's done. I've seen the dice turn on people too many times and a game will flip unexpectedly.
In a game with chance, don't throw away the small chance you might have by assuming the outcome.
