We can't make the whole weekend, but should catch a couple of days. Jonathan's birthday is the 7th, so maybe we can make this a birthday present.

DEXCON and DREAMATION are unique conventions in several aspects:
1. There is one "up front" registration fee. All events (save "sealed events") are free to enter.
2. They have a "Con Suite", offering snacks and beverages to ALL attendees for free. The hotel also offers catering for lunch and dinner.
3. The majority of events qualify for "prize points", which can be redeemed at the Prize table. I have donated SFR product to the Prize table at past shows (which always dissappears by Sunday), and will continue to do so at this one. I provide the prizes for the Dragon Dice events, so these events are one of the few that do not qualify for the "prize points".
4. At DREAMATION, the winner of the Dragon Dice Regional qualifier wins a free registration to DEXCON and is automatically qualified for the Dragon Dice US National event. At DEXCON, the winner of the US National event also receives a trophy (provided by the DEXCON staff).
5. There is a separate "Dealer Room" for retailers (which is a secured area), but there are also Exhibitor booths (which are unsecured) for authors and game manufacturers, located in the hotel lobby and also by the convention registration area. I'll be representing SFR at one of the Exhibitor booths in the hotel lobby (conveniently located by where the Dragon Dice events will be held). None of the retailers from past shows has carried any Dragon Dice products, but I will have product with me that will be available at the booth. There is also a coupon in the convention program that attendees can present for 10% off any purchase of Dragon Dice product at the convention (which was first implemented by Steve Braun, when he represented SFR at these shows).

The event schedule for DEXCON XIV has been posted, and the event listing at the top have been edited to include the proper event numbers.

One important correction should be noted: The final round of the US National Championship will be "Constructed Army" (the DEXCON XIV event schedule has it listed as a "Constructed Starter" event - which is incorrect).

I know I'm not going to be able to afford the trip this year...
and I really want to go,
so I was wondering,
"is it possible to just show up to the convention as a walk-in?
including dragon dice events?
or is some sort of pre-registration required?

Yes. You can show up for a day, or the whole weekend. Pre-registration is not required.

DEXCON and DREAMATION are a bit different as far as conventions go. The registration price is a bit high (compared to other conventions), but there are no event fees (except for sealed-box or sealed-deck events, where the price is for unopened product, and that is usually a discounted price compared to retail).

All events are displayed on what they call the "Big Board" and you simply write your name on each event you want to participate in - so there are no ticket lines. If all the slots are filled for the event you are interested in, you can still go to the event in case there is a "no show", or sometimes the event organizer might expand the number of participants.

The convention goes on all day and all night, so no matter when you happen to be awake, there are always gaming events going on (but not Dragon Dice events between midnight and 9 AM).

DEXCON XIV Post-convention Report

DEXCON XIV was held at the Morristown Hyatt in Morristown, New Jersey, from July 6-10, 2011. The convention is run by Double Exposure, and is their largest convention of several that they organize each year. Estimated attendence this year was 1500-2000 attendees (based on badge numbers I saw).

The usual Dragon Dice player base that has attended the last three shows (DREAMATION 2010 to DEXCON XIII to DREAMATION 2011) was off a bit at DEXCON XIV, but I saw an increase in novice players and demonstration game participants - so I hope to see some of them at next year's DREAMATION 2012, particpating in the Intermediate or Advanced Dragon Dice events.

Here is a review of each event listed at DEXCON XIV:
C0390: Dragon Dice Novice Tournament. (Thursday AM)
This event was attended by four players, which was won by Spencer Moore.

C0429: Dragon Dice boardgame playtest session. (Thursday afternoon)
This event was attended by players familiar with Dragon Dice, but curious about how a boardgame of the same name would work. One attendee of note was Chris Adams, who did artwork for the Treefolk. Using a 16-tile board, two teams of two players fought for dominion of Esfah, with the victory conditions set at controlling 12 territories. The Goblins and Morehl gained an early momentum at the expense of the Dwarves, who lost two of their 4 starting territories. The Selumari eventually evened the territory score by taking two territories from the Goblins, and the shift in momentum continued, with the overly agressive Goblins herded into one territory and the Morehl holding their 4 territories - at which point the Goblins and Morehl conceded. The main mechanics were well received, but some minor corrections are required with some of the SAI definitions for the boardgame application.

C0458: First qualifier for the 2011 U.S. National Dragon Dice Championship. (Thursday PM), This was a "Constructed Starter" Event (two races, each of 18-health in a distribution as would be seen in a 2-player starter) using Intermediate Rules. Jared Schuller won this event with a Morehl/Undead army.

C0461: Dragon Dice Novice Tournament. (Thursday PM)
There were no attendees for this event, but as fate would have it, this gave me time to provide a detailed demonstration game with Carl Hausman, a reporter for his Morristown school, which was videotaped. Carl and his folks were intrigued with the Dragon Dice demonstration and purchased two of the 2-player starter sets the following morning.

C0534: Second qualifier for the 2011 U.S. National Dragon Dice Championship. (Friday AM), This was a "Constructed Starter" Event (two races, each of 18-health in a distribution as would be seen in a 2-player starter) using Intermediate Rules. Jared Schuller won this event with a Goblin/Undead army.

C0547: Dragon Dice Novice Tournament (Friday AM)
Players were provided a 36-health army from one race in a distribution as would be found in a 2-player starter (2 x monsters, 2 x rares, 6 x uncommon, 10 x commons). Arthur Ramos won this event with a Selumari army.

C0585: The third qualifier for the 2011 U.S. National Dragon Dice Championship was a "Constructed Army" format (36-health, no more than half of the army can be magicians) using all Advanced Rules. Dusty Youngs won with event with a Feral army. As Dusty had already qualified, Micheal Schuller qualified with a Dwarven/Morehl army.

C0605: Dragon Dice Novice Tournament. (Friday afternoon)
Players were provided a 36-health army from one race in a distribution as would be found in a 2-player starter (2 x monsters, 2 x rares, 6 x uncommon, 10 x commons). Bethany Schulze won this event with an Amazon army.

C0639: The fourth qualifier for the 2011 U.S. National Dragon Dice Championship was a "Single Race" Event using Intermediate Rules. Dusty Youngs won this event with an Undead army.

C0642: Dragon Dice Novice Tournament. (Friday PM)
Players were provided a 36-health army from one race in a distribution as would be found in a 2-player starter (2 x monsters, 2 x rares, 6 x uncommon, 10 x commons). Tim Kimball won this event with a Goblin army.

C0717: The fifth qualifier for the 2011 U.S. National Dragon Dice Championship was a Sealed Box Tournament. There were no attendees to this event.

C0730: Dragon Dice Novice Tournament (Saturday AM)
This was a well-attended event with a lot of really good games. Players were provided a 36-health army from one race in a distribution as would be found in a 2-player starter (2 x monsters, 2 x rares, 6 x uncommon, 10 x commons). Chris Mattos, a brand new player to Dragon Dice, won this event with a Morehl army.

C0780: The sixth qualifier for the 2011 U.S. National Dragon Dice Championship was a Battlefest event using all Advanced Rules. The 3-Judge rule was put into practice for this event. There was a tie for first place between Dusty Youngs (Goblin/Undead) and Daniel Burkley (Frostwings/Morehl). Daniel Burkley qualified for the championship round.

C0793: Dragon Dice Novice Tournament. (Saturday afternoon)
There were no attendees for this event (which permitted me to enter into the Battlefest event, plus I had two other GM's qualified enough to act as judges to implement the "3-judge rule".)

C0829: The 2011 U.S. National Dragon Dice Championship had four eligible players, but Daniel Burkley (last year's US champion) would not play in the championship round (not enough GM's to use the 3-judge rule), which meant we would have a brand new US champion. Dusty Youngs and Jared Schuller had faced each other several times at DREAMATION 2011, and would do so again at DEXCON XIV across many different events, each having their share of victories. The last round came to a final showdown between these two experienced players. The opening circumstances favored Jared (who won the initiative and chose to go first), with the opening terrains being 6, 5, 6 and Jared commanding a predominantly Goblin army at two Swamplands. Jared wasted no time ploughing into Dusty's Undead sorcerers at the Undead Homeland, eliminating most of them. The other battle in front of Jared's home was more evenly contested, as Jared attacked with his Home army (which contained his mages) and managed to give as good as he received. The Undead took advantage of their stepped damage capability, which kept the Undead in contention for control of the Goblin homeland terrain. Once Jared claimed the Undead homeland terrain, he used Path to transfer over some reinforcements to his Goblin homeland and whittled the Undead army down by attrition. Jared Schuller is now our 2011 Dragon Dice US National Champion, and he has the trophy to prove it. (Both players' armies are posted at the end of this report.)

C0833: Dragon Dice Novice Tournament (Saturday PM)

must be a typo here...

2 x Lich 6 magic
1 x Vampire 2 magic
2 x Heuceva 4 magic

2 x Adept (Apparition?) 2 magic
1 x black Dragon Staff 4 magic
1 x Bronze Medallion 4 magic

total 22 magic

I'd be interested in what the real army was...if you find out...

===============

Thanks Dan for posting the armies and game descriptions.

I want to make it to one of these someday.

Jared, nice win.
I was wondering how you would follow up your Undead army win,
it seems like Dusty carried the torch.

Well I entered the Swampland Vortex into the National Pool.

No minors both players...
that makes it easy.

Well now, that's an excellant point, Jim.
The Apparitions were incorrectly called Adepts, which I've edited.
I must have mis-read one or more dice. I'll let Dusty correct the army list.
