The events have been submitted for Origins '05. The events have not yet been posted for pre-reg on the Origins Website http://www.originsgames.com/, but it should be up soon. Check out our page for the events we'll be running: http://www.sfr-inc.com/origins05.htm

Just curious-are there any restrictions on who may enter Intermediate vs. Championship tounraments? I would imagine anyone with enough guts can try the Championship, but should players who have won titles (at least "major" titles) refrain from the Intermediate?

If this is covered in the DDII rules, just point me there with the note, "Read the rules, dummy!" Smile

I must admit the rules are not very clear on that point. Off-hand, I'd say anyone that has advanced to the second round of the Worlds should not be allowed to play intermediate level events. There was an idea to keep track of tournament "points" and give people levels on that basis. But it was more work than anyone wanted to do. It certainly is not high on my list of things to get done.

At this point I think there should be no restrictions on playing at any level. If we want the game to have any sort of chance we need to get as many people playing at all times as possible. I'd rather take a tournament loss if it means that 16 or more people are playing than win when only 4 show up.

Additionally, your game will improve much faster if you play someone better than you are. You learn a lot of new tactics in short order when you get thrashed by one of the best! :^)

Actually, my concern isn't for newer players who want to play higher brackets (if I go, I'll compete in whatever championship event is held), but keeping experienced players from dominating new players in lower categories. Even with the leveling of the playing field via the rules restrictions, I feel I would have a good chance to place quite high in a Novice event, since I am by no means a novice. I would expect high-level events to be all comers, take your chances, but categories for less experienced players should be protected against an "invasion" of players who just want to pump up their placement.

This is a problem that we have had in the past. Currently there is not a good system for determining who is a novice and who isn't. We have had people play in the novice games that were not novices. It comes down to what your policy is going to be. Do you say no to a loyal player and possibly anger him or do you let them play and probably dominate? Tough questions, but a standard needs to be set.

Perhaps for the time being we need a different nomenclature for tournaments. Instead of names that imply player experience (such as Novice) they should be named by rule sets (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced). Even specialty tournaments could be "classed" close to one of these three, with event special rules added. A new player could enter a Basic tournament, without having the impression that it is limited to beginning players. And if an experienced player wants to play by the Basic rules, there would be no stigma attached to it as if he/she were somehow trying to sneak into an event against less-experienced players.

The only problem is that you really want beginning players to play against one another. An experienced player will dominate the game no matter what level of rules are being used. This would probably give the beginning players a bad taste in their mouth so to speak and possibly not play again.

I will say that the demos we would run really became our novice events in the end. We really didn't have a true novice tournament, we transitioned it to a demo with a lot of playing other beginners.

The main reason we did this was to allow new players to play against other new players and for as long as they liked in the 4 hour slot. It was kind of like a long swiss tournament, but not really stringent on the tournament part. We essentially phased out the novice events and just replaced them with demos every 2 hours. That probably could be pushed back to once every 4 hours. The other reason was that most experienced players didn't want to sit through a demo again. Thus, there weren't any experienced players in these events.

I tried to get on the Origins/GAMA web site today, and there was a notice that it had been suspended. Anyone know what's up? There are up to 5 DD players I know looking into the possibility of going this year.

Looks like somebody forget to pay the bill at the webhost. It's not back yet, just a note that it's coming back soon. I'd guess that it should be fully back online sometime next week.

Even though SFR won't have a booth, will there be dice for sale at Origins?

Sub-question: Assuming I get to Origins, should I bring my leftover rep program promos with me for SFR to sell?

Event sign-ups have started today for Origins!

It will kick you over to the GAMA site to put each event into a shopping cart for you. Fairly easy to register and pay for events.

I'm looking forward to my first DD tourny and learning all I can. Very Happy

Note for anyone planning on being in SFR events at Origins. All tournaments have been changed from Double Elimination to Swiss. This lets you play for the full 4 hour time slot no matter how many times you lose. Shocked Of course, if you win all your games, it makes no difference at all. Cool

Wow-this means I can play more than six games in my three events! But it will cut into my shopping time, since I was figuring on having a couple extra hours after every DD event. Smile

I've uploaded new pics from Origins to our Meetup site. For those that give a rat's patootie, you can check them out here...

http://boardgames.meetup.com/278/

They're divided into several different albums (one for each day). Some of the Saturday shots didn't take, but I'll try to get them up again at some point.

Cheers! Smile

Here's another story from Origins...

There's a new game out, called "Why Did the Chicken...?" Very funny word/parlor/party game. In fact, the creator of the game sold two copies to DD stalwarts (guess which two?). The object of the game is to make up punch lines to questions formed by splicing two random nouns into a question card. Joe and Chris talked me into doing a demo while Jonathan was off playing Live Action Role Playing Chess.

There are seven players in this demo. So the question comes out: "Why did the crocodile want to be a lumberjack?" Everybody writes out as many punch lines as they can, and they are passed to a reader.

The usual suspects are trotted out: "Because he's OK...Because the alligator got the forest ranger job...To meet beavers..." when all of a sudden this answer is read: "Because he didn't like the Treefolk." Upon which three of the seven players (long since sleep-deprived, since this was Sunday) burst into hysterical laughter, while the other four look at them (read: us) like we were nuts, since the answer made no sense to them at all. It did give us a chance to put in a plug for DD, though.

(BTW, Jonathan was the only warrior to survive to the end game, and was the last player to be killed in his game, which his team won anyway on style points.)
