I think it just boils down to how versatile do you want your army to be? That's why I throw in a Spearer and / or Medusa or 2 because you won't always get things to work out the way that you had planned.
So Charioteer is better at Flatland, but the Runner is better on the other terrains. _________________ HeroScape - Tree Town Open Champion (2008, 2016), Nebraska Skirmish Champion (2008, 2010) GenCon LightWeight Champion (2009), GenCon General Wars (Aquilla Champion 2009) GenCon Unique Hero Champion (2009, 2010)

Well I played against my friend with Goblins. It worked swimmingly, taking three out of three games, until he started placing his starting army at the campaign with my mages; those games went poorly. (We don't usually hide while setting up)
For the most part, I only lost to craziness like Leopard Riders chaining Rend 3+ times at a shot. When that didn't happen, my Frostwing mages were enough to hold him back; between lightning, burial, Field of Ice, Wind Walk, and Wind Wall, he couldn't do much of anything. |

I personally have always been partial to Frost Wing mixin' it up with Coral Elves. I have to be honest though, I tend to be one of the few partial to the Corals. They're coastland basic terrains have 4 missle faces. With the right maneuvers you can start the game on missile every time.
They share blue magic and are unique to coastland except for terrain flight. Wind wall stacking with wall of ice is always a plus. _________________ Will

i second the frostwing mages and amazons...
18 health of magus and 18 health of javalineers are kinda nasty.
playing on a home of flatland standing stones and putting a flatland grove in the frontier is fun to pair with them. if you dont get to go first with your mages starting out on the frontier they cant double magic either can you and you can get a half chance that face will be magic so you can use your counter magic to stop their magic for sure. also if you loose guys on having them go first pull back into reserves with the whole crew and make a magic missile roll to bring back guys with the magus and fire away with the javalineers from reserves to home or frontier.
if youlove the horde roll and they keep their frontier pull back to reserves and fire away for one turn and head to your home where the javalineers will be able to use their manuevers as missiles supported by the missile on the magus...
it works! well it does for me. |

Yeah it totally works like a charm. I only really face one guy who is still figuring out his builds, but those Frostwings are so brutal to any magic he attempts, and the Amazons are crazy at a flatland (especially if you catch an 8th face or take a Bridge with you).
It's been really sweet and a lot of fun to play. If only Magi weren't so darned rare!! |
