Well my Undead got spanked today by some terribly hostile swamp stalkers. They are VERY sturdy even more than that of the undead. DTWalkex figured out how very much to use Mire and the game was his twice over. Though oddly enough the lava elves are coming through against firewalkers and swampstalkers.

I wanna give credit to DT though, as I thought he was a tacticless ape but as Webmaster Wiggs has pointed out to me time and time again you simply have to find the right dice for certain people. We have been playin for 4 months now and I have been pounding him ever since losing to him at most 1 and 3 games but usually losing less than that, until this terrible break through. My hats off to DTWalkex.

It used to be that we could get by with little to no magic, but lately the circle I play with is leaning towards heavy heavy magic. Its very hard to compete if you cannot roll atleast 15 expected pts. w/an 18 pt. army and ~20 pts. is considered to be a competing number.

It would seem that dancing lights is becoming a necessity, maybe I am starting to realize the strength in the dwarves' color combination.

I have a 2 part question. First, what is a good strat around Mire. DT had 2 swamplands and he was rolling movement that I have not yet seen in this game. To say dont let him get swampland in the mid is an impossibility. Dragons do nothing as he just saves. 2nd, has anyone come across dealing with heavy magic like this? I mean one could play frostwing or something, but I mean just a little more generic idea of strats. I realize nothing is perfect just wondering how the founding fathers have dealt with this, as your wisdom has helped me through both hording and SAI's and I am ever greatful and thirsting for more.

TRtM, finger of death and any SAI that ignores saves. Evil eye him in two consecutive turns so he'll have to ignore all his ordinary saves. Beat him on the horde roll so you can deny him of that 2nd swamp. That's about all I can think of for the armies that you play.

Sounds like the Swamp stalkers included a lot of cavalry. These guys do save and maneuver a decent bit, but they are generally unable to poke a hole in anything. Perhaps a white dragon might also be a nice option as they are pretty hard to get rid of. Add deadlands for extra breath results Twisted Evil.

Still, for undead, there arn't a lot of easy options. Good luck in cracking those scales...

Ouch! Shocked Pretty harsh. The greatest thing about this game is you can go "brute strength" Twisted Evil or "deviously tricky" Cool and everything in between...all choices have their own pros and cons.

I'm pretty sure you guys are friends, so I will cut you the benefit of the doubt as I have never played you yet. However, I am hoping that when we play, you dont come off as "over confident" Rolling Eyes as you sound. I've always found its best to "speak softly, but carry a big stick" personally Wink . Still, looking forward to meeting you on the battlefields of ESFAH! Roll on!, Den

Oh ya me and DT Are good friends. Confident absolute. But I just love this game. And DT yesterday showed me a good ol' fashioned beat down.

Was a blast. Now that you mention it that did look like a back handed compliment. Hahaha truly not my intention, I was just crackin' wise at him for cutting me down to size.

Also, Funky, what did you mean by that with the deadlands and dragon breath? You have sparked my curiosity.

It was good to finally stomp you but I know you will be figuring a way around mire. Ska you keep me on my toes. I guess the best way to improve is to be stomped and learn from your mistakes.

the white dragon has 'terrain empathy', which lets it breathe the same colors as the terrain it is on. Add a deadlands to the terrain, and the white dragon produces an extra black breath when the breath icon is rolled. In theory, you could produce some pretty ridiculous amounts of breath, but 3 would be pretty good already.

Yes, magic is a big part of the game. The strategy section from the DCM had this to say:
Dice Commander's Manual wrote:
Nothing in the game can compare to magic's versatility and power. Over the long haul, magic proves itself to be superior to all other actions. Magic can kill. It can strike from a distance greater than that of missiles, and it invites no automatic counter-attack. Moreover, magic allows the return of units from the dead. Magic creates a diversity of effects that other actions cannot match. In tournament play, most players don't hesitate to bring exactly one-half their units in magicians.
Always take a magic action. Even if your army is under the effects of spells such as Ashstorm or even Backlash, it never hurts to roll.

If he likes to sit in a swamp, then bring some goblin mages, throw down a Soiled Ground, then let loose with the Fingers of Death. You can use Elemental Blast to get rid of a Mire. Evil Eye will get rid of his normal saves, spells like Transmute Rock to Mud will get rid of his maneuvers as saves (and make it easier for you to maneuver). You can keep throwing dragons on him; eventually you'll get some breaths.

Dancing Lights, Ashstorm, Palsy, Magic Drain. Basically, fight magic with magic. Blue dragon breath is also fun to use (right Chuck?). If you can kill off his mages faster than he can bring them back, then you'll gain an advantage.

When (not if - they are more than capable) the stalkers win the hoard roll against your Undead you need to move first to win the 8th face on one of their swamps (probably frontier). If you succeed you deprive the Stalker player of their preferred terrain for their second 8th - or - they have to try to break your hold on it. Neither is a good spot for them to be in :).

The thing about Mire is, he can only Mire a terrain every other turn. You can only target a terrain not currently under Mire, and it expiries at the end of the casters next turn. So while it does buy him a turn to regroup it's only one turn.

Reading about it though makes me think you need to go after his home first after all.[/b]

Katsu, that is very interesting. I never knew that and I seriously appreciate that. I have a TERRIBLE habit of not looking stuff up real carefully if I dont use it in my Lava Elves or Undead builds. You have done me a world of justice I owe you for that tid bit.

No can do big guy (katsu) I have a ton of work to do. I picked up a project from work that I will be dealing with all weekend.

Actually though, with Katsu's new information I dont fear the Mire. I spoke with DT on the phone with this info and its interesting stuff. I dont need to fear the Mire as much, not even close. The way we understood the rule, he was simply spamming it and it was outta control. I dont blame him one bit though because for ever I was finger of death/ashing him until DProman said to knock that cheating off. Hahahaha. Anyway good stuff. I can move on from this though the responses I got were still very helpful. I never knew that with the White Dragon either. I dont own one but I should grab a couple for me and Nata, my firewalking girl friend.

Now that I think of it I have to ask, is there anyone else out there who plays only one race? Maybe a circle of friends who each play their own race? Or is it just me? Whats your take on this dudes?

I'd say 90 percent of my armies are 1 race...they just look cooler and somehow it just makes sense thematically to me. Although lately I have been experimenting with 2 race armies such as Lava elves with Dwarves, and Swampies with Goblins. Some of the other synergistic 2 race armies I may eventually get around to playing with would be Amazons/Feral and Frostwings with Corals or Firewalkers. For some reason i'm not a big fan of Undead, Treefolk, or Scalders....will just have to force myself to play them more i guess. Rolling Eyes

Try Feral/Treefolk. They play together very well, both on a game level as well as at a thematic level. Bring a gold medallion with them, for some reason everyone wants to bury them.... Sad

Its not just that, but also that every army has an army that can beat it... so you can't just play the same army time after time (unless your opponent never changes)

Lava Elves are coming through. The Rakshasa was the best idea I have ever had to add to the mage army. Illusion is too awesome, it adds saves and has some what decent magic on it. Figuring out how they work took some time but actually I mentioned a little while ago that my circle of DD mates are heavy in magic as of late, well these guys are the solution.
Between illusion and dancing lights I was able to switch things back to attrition.
Granted illusion only protects from army targeting spells but no more foul water or hail storms and no more getting shot at. After many a time trying they are awesome. Though I am seeing w/their lack of speed spells or terring manipulation that, much like the undead, they cut down armies rather than move to 8, though everything is in reaction. This game is too amazingly versatile. Back in the day I was finding that they were getting rolled but that was before the high end magic took over, when melee was top dog, things have changed.
If only I could get my hands on a beholder that would be big pimpin'...

As Webmaster Wiggs has also pointed out there are only fads and no army is king. Just a matter of time before you figure it out.

Very cool meet up today. 7 people were there.Dr. Oliver Cross and his amazons stalemated a 4 person game with Natalya and her Coral Elves. Katsu was spanking DTWalkex with his black magic, he out ranges me as I am limited to Lava Elves and Undead, he expands to the frosties. None the less Katsu is a power house.

I wanna give a special shout out to Katsu, he has become a rep I believe and thing is he spends most of his time figuring out how to better the game and not his own play and I always appreciate that.

Oliver Cross loves his ranged, dont think you got your own back he will hit you with w/e. He duped me into trading him a 3 chance of double moves minor flat land and he ended up rolling an average of 30 something dmg a shot.

Enough of the credits.
I think I may have to close this thread soon as I am done buying undead or lavas as I hit 18 pts of every class. Webmaster Pint MAY ask, "What if you want 36 of something non magic? (Or) Maybe a variation difference in that army?" He would be right, you can never have too many die. I was at Gaurdian Games today in Portland, Oregon and got everything I was missing outta my lavas. Obviously my Undead are good to go, but have been focusing on the hard to do elves. I am going to take that plunge and buy the promo die that match every color/hybrid combo of my 2 races (and Natalyas), (For folks not following the thread thats Undead and Lava Elves for me and Firewalkers and Coral Elves for Natalya. (As always I have to buy a dragon /something/ of each of the 3 *4* colors we use).

I read my own post and realized that there is no follow up to the thread title so ill give one now; Any last standing advice for a black magic user? My Elves are awesome and good to go though i find they are a ton more circumstantial than the Undead. I have to be a bit more lucky on the initial terrain rolls w/them and skill is always a factor and things will improve but they are very hard to play.

I have yet to try the LE/burning hands approach to my Undead melee but I am still thinking that a double whammy of evil eyes is more effect, what say you oh knowledgeable ones?
