Quick question - sorry if this has been covered before.

Assume my army consists of only rares and monsters.
Assume that army takes two points of damage, before any saves.
If I read the rules correctly, the army wouldn't normally be harmed. (As it takes three damage to kill a rare.)

My question is, assuming I'm correct, can I choose to make the Save roll anyway? If I have dice with Cantrip or Regenerate icons I might want to.

Do I *have* to make a Save roll? (Can't think of anything bad that might happen on a Save roll, but...)

What if there was no damage at all? Can I make a Save roll anyway?

Cheers,
Graham

In the section on melee and the section on missile, the following sentence appears:
Quote:
If and only if normal damage is inflicted does the defending army roll for saves.

The meaning of this is quite clear (I hope). If the army takes normal damage it rolls for saves. If the army takes no normal damage it does not roll for saves. Note it does not say anything about whether or not the damage would actually affect any units in the army.

So for your first question, yes you roll for "saves". You don't need any, but as you point out, you might get something that will help you out. Do you "have" to make the roll? Technically yes, but to speed games along, my group often doesn't, or only rolls the units that could get Cantrip, Regenerate or whatever.

As for the second case (no normal damage), you cannot roll in that case.

Note on "normal damage": normal damage is damage that is inflicted by normal icons (melee or missile), IDs, or Special Action Icons (SAIs) that do normal damage. If the SAI states that it does something outside of the normal (see Smite as a good example of special damage), then it is not normal. If it says to add the results to normal results, then it's normal damage.

Thanks for the quick answer. I thought that was the answer, but was worried my judgment might have been clouded by the trolls in my army...

Cheers,
Graham
