so i had a possibly silly question. Say for instance that you have an army that dosent have any missile icons. can you still roll for missile attack and pray that id icons come up. I assumed that you couldn't roll for missile if you didn't have any missile icons. Thanks

An ID always counts for whatever you're rolling for. You can attempt a missile attack without missile icons, or magic without mages, or anything else. The ID always counts. (My son plays a lot of Undead, which would otherwise never be able to attempt a missile attack.)

If you are making a combination roll, such as your army's roll vs. a dragon, you can count the IDs for any of the relevant results, and even split them up. For instance, you roll 4 ID icons. You could count them as 4 melee, 4 missile, or 4 saves, or split them up, such as 2 melee/2 saves, 3 missile/1 save, or 1 melee/3 missile, depending on what your other results are.

And here's a little advanced trick against a dragon- IDs always have to be used for a relevant result, but against a dragon missile and melee are both relevant. If you don't want to kill a dragon (leaving it to attack an opponent), you can count IDs as the result you DON'T want. For example, you roll 6 saves, 8 melee, and 1 missile against a dragon claw. You have enough saves, and if you take the IDs as melee you'll kill the dragon. By counting them as missiles, you don't have enough of either melee or missile to kill the dragon, and it survives.

I agree with Steve's trick of sometimes leaving the dragon in place to attack the opponent, particularly if your opponent (who most likely summoned the dragon onto the terrain anyway) has the weaker army and was hoping to have you destroyed (plus kill the dragon) by the dragon.
If you can, try rolling for magic and get another dragon (who won't fight the first dragon - so the summoner has to face two dragons) to the terrain, then leave. Mr. Green I think you can see what could happen to the opponent.

Properly used, dragons can be quite the offensive tool.

Later,
