Hello All,
I was just wondering what armies some of you fellow forum members would use if you could have made it to Gencon.
For those attending, I wouldn't suggest posting here and let your super secret army out of the bag.
However, for those unable to attend, please let me know what you would have played.

As much as I would love to write an honest answer, I just can't. Not because don't want to tip off Scott for any possibilities next year, but because I just don't know.
We discussed army building all the way to Origins (it seems), but I had no idea up until the very moment I sat at the table what I was going to play. I'm a 'spur of the moment' builder, and had no dice pulled prior to any event.
So, you see, until I'm actually at GenCon, I can't tell you what I might have played.
Sorry, Scott. Try the thumbscrews next time. _________________ The Maj

In spite of being a Goblin fan I think I would either take my Amazon- or my Undead army with me. The latter is presently the baddest gang I got together, closely followed by my Amazons.
Further games will show if I will have to make any further minor changes to this Undead army but presently I just love to play them and won against Lava Elves, Goblins, Coral Elves, Dwarfes and Ferals!
So I guess I'd favorize my Undead to play a tournament.
Here's the set up:
4x Apparition C
2x Skeleton C
2x Spectre UC
1x Revenant UC
2x Heucuva UC
4x Vampire R
2x Minor Death M
Additionally, if allowed, 12 points of black Dragonkin in various rarities.
Since I won't make it to GenCon unless I win a lotterie there's no reason to tremble in panic, folks, my Undead will stay at home! _________________

It depends a lot on which event we are playing. If we are talking about battlefest...
half masters, half slayers, half treefolk monsters. (if you are sneaky they don't notice the extra 30 health )
Worlds? probably a variation of my lava elf army (FEARFUL FLAMES!)
Duels? (not that anyone is running it this year), but I'd bring my Vampire character and get her levels maxed out finally.
Team? totally depends on who my partner is. but probably a swampstalker/treefolk mix or possibly a feral/undead mix. |

At Origins, Amazons with either Treefolk or Frostwings seemed to do very well, most of the time. There was an all Pelter Army that did very well as well.

Yep, my son Robert used a 60 Pelter army in Battlefest. Had he played smart, instead of trying to be a wise guy, he might have won. He tried a cut-down version in No Magicians, but fell in a three-player game when his younger brother retreated to reserves, regenerated an entire army of Leopard Riders and Trolls, then went to the frontier, maneuvered it to melee, and thrashed the Pelters. In the process the LR/Trolls took enough damage to let Joe win the game, but I think Jonathan was just as happy crushing his brother. _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun

I was thinking maybe for Battlefest an army of one of each common... _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun

Given my success at Origins, any army I posted as one I would actually attempt to use would be one to avoid like the plague.
At Origins, I used a Dwarven army for Race, a Leopard Rider/Troll army in Battlefest (which wasn't too bad, but goes against the prevailing BF wisdom), and a truly experimental army in No Magicians that involved a King Die. It's hard to say how well that might have worked IF I hadn't forgotten to roll the King on about six of my turns... _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun

Scott, my friend. Oh wouldn't you like to know...lol.
My second son was just born Monday, so I have a VERY slim chance of being able to attend. Just in case a miracle does happen can someone tell me when and where Gencon will be this year?
Is there an event schedule?
Also who will be running the thing?
Thanks in advance for you answers. |

So, we pirates are pillaging the west coast and there just so happens to be a GenCon coming to Anaheim... will SFR have a booth there? Or is it not worth my time (or me Crew's) to show up and create a little mayhem? _________________ Capt. F. De Tombre

SFR will not be going to GenCon SoCal. We went 2 years ago, and it really wasn't worth it for us to go. See the problem is, they want more money for a booth at GenCon SoCal than GenCon Indy. However, Indy had around 27,000 people show up, SoCal last year had about 9,000.
However, that has nothing to do with someone (anyone) running an event at the show. We didn't have a booth at Origins, but there were a number of events run. So far, no one has stepped up to run some events at SoCal (hint, hint). SFR will always be ready to help out with events (read: send some dice for prizes). _________________ You can never have too many dice.

What Chuck said is true. I ran all the events at Origins - got a free admission for my efforts - and got DD going again in the Columbus area. It would be super if someone would do this in Southern California and Europe as well. The dice Chuck and Cliff provided (in addition to some T-shirts) made very nice prizes. If someone runs events at CONs that SFR provides prizes for, I would be happy to print up certificates for 1st through 4th, if you give me enough lead time and a mailing address to mail the certificates to and the names of the events.

Hi Scott,
Can you post some of your Championship armies?
Perhaps someone will try one at GenCon 2007.
(all I have found is that you always add a Dragon Slayer)
I tried the 1997 World Champion army and won second place in 2006.
I would love to see what your World Champion armies can do.
Based on your high mathematical skills, and strategic knowledge,
it would been fun to try.
Also I would like to compliment you on your friendly personality.
besides complimenting you on your stature in Dragon Dice.
I have not been able to find a data base
that support the Championship armies.
thanks,

Hey Jim,
Not a problem, and thanks for the compliments.
My World Champion army from 2005 was the following:
2 Blue Dragonmaster
2 Black Dragonmaster
2 Blue Dragonslayers
2 Black Dragonslayers
2 common Frostwing Mages
1 Blue Speed Slipper
1 Black Speed Slipper
2 Black Dragons
1 Coastland Tower
1 Flatland Standing Stone
1 Black DKC
1 Blue Rare Dragonkin
1 Black Uncommon Dragonkin
2 Common Blue Dragonkin
1 Common Black Dragonkin
1 of each type of minor terrain with 2 melee icons.
All Dragonkin were the type that has the most maneuvers.
Idea for the army, win initiative and go first.
Try not to get into a magic battle.
Take advantage of Sneak Attack as much as possible and use black cantrip to bury units.
Weakness: Lightning Strike
This army actually maneuvers very well with the masters.
Setup: Masters with speed slippers in hoard.
Where to put the slayers is the biggest option with this army. Do you put them in the frontier hoping to catch your opponents mages, or do you put them on your opponents home hoping to catch an opponent trying to win the hoard roll or trying to trick you by putting their mages at their home.
I have generally gone with the frontier, but sometimes I switch it up.
Well I guess that is the basics of this army, pur aggro beat up your opponents as fast as you can because you will lose a battle of attrition.
At one time Mark Wiker was keeping track of Championship armies, but I don't know if that web site still exists.

Thanks Scott for posting your 2005 World Champion Army,
Very Powerful!!!!
I'm going to try this army, along with your strategy guidance.
Here is Mark A. Wiker's web site:
http://www.geocities.com/mawiker/donjon.htm
The site lists his Championship and Title Armies
I was wondering if anyone had ever won a World Championship using a
Dragon Master, or Dragonlord.
Now I know thanks to you.
Thanks again,Scott
Very exciting army!!!!!
