At the end of the "Trifecta" on-line game, I had inquired if there were any "team" formats for Dragon Dice. Aside from "free-for-all's", a "team" format is an alternative option for a 4 (or 6) player game. Such options exist for other boardgaming and miniatures gaming systems, so before I tried to "re-invent the wheel", I'd like to know about any existing formats, along with their merits and pitfalls.

Chuck had replied: "There was a team tournament at GenCon. However, people lost interest in it, so we dropped it. It really almost became a new game in it's own right. If you want to talk more about it, start a thread in the Game Variations forum."

So I would like to find out more about the GenCon "team tournament".

Team Tournament – Here, a game is played between two teams of two players each. The winning team advances to the next round. In determining the order of play, the player with the highest horde roll decides if he or she wants to go first or select the frontier terrain. If that player decides to go first, the player on the opposing team that had the highest horde roll would go second, then alternate players from both teams for third and fourth. If the player with the highest horde roll decides to choose the frontier terrain, then he or she would go second and the player on the opposing team that had the highest horde roll would go first. Again, alternate players from both teams for third and fourth. Magic is also different than standard rules. You may throw friendly spells on your partner’s armies and units as if they were your own. If a spell would normally bring components into your army, instead they join your partner’s army at that terrain. If your partner does not have an army at that terrain, then those units form a new army. You may not cast any spells on your partner’s units that would bring those units to reserves.

If dice from both team-mates are at the same terrain, are they considered one army? The spell rules I quoted above suggest that this would be the case (and I'm in favor of this interpretation). Team-mates that have units at the same terrain could not form separate armies at that terrain.

If that is true, an attack from an opposing army (such as a melee or missile attack) would be considered to be against the combined army of both team-mates? Each team-player would roll their affected dice for the action (such as a save roll)?

During a player's turn, it he chose a "combined army" for a March at a terrain, both the player and his team-mate would roll for the action determined by the player?

If all of the above is correct, the only location that could not have a combined army would be the Reserve. Each player would have their own Reserve, where only their units could be present.

Er, no.

While you can cast spells on your teammate's armies as if they were your armies, the armies are not combined. The bit about bringing back your teammate's units, is to show that they are separate not combined.

Basically the two players play independently as far as actions go. If one army is engaged in melee at a terrain, a teammate's army at the same terrain is just watching, it's not in the action.
