| I was just wondering - is there a general consensus on how many of one dice to keep before it becomes "extra"? Are there different schools of thought on how many of each common/uncommon/rare/monster to keep before it gets ridiculous? |

There's no such thing as too many dice.
Generally though, once you have more than 36 health of a particular die, then you've probably got some extras. |

Jace,
Sorry, I haven't been able to get back to you yet (still working on the "extras" list, 600+ dice and counting, whew!)
From this forum and my DD group I've heard of many collection sizes.
[1] Chuck's ready made sets (2R, 5U, 10C, & 1ea M) great place to start.
[2) Many players like (4R, 6U, 12C, & 3ea M) for multiples of 12, easy to make a 36pt. army.
[3] Personally, I'm trying (6R, 9U, 18C, & 4ea M) for a round 18pts (or close to it)- I'm finding this difficult to do, however.
[4] Another option is (2R, 3U, 6C) (at least 1ea M) that way you have 18pts of each class.
I hope this helps,

That 's quite a pile of dice there, Dave! You'd better have a mean abacus if you're trying to sort that out, that's for sure
I was only curious because while my collection is nowhere near big enough to have extras, I wanted to know if I at least had any extra commons that I could afford to hand out as "free samples" to inquiring minds, or if I had enough dice to start setting aside extras for display armies.
I haven't been trying to go out and demo the game yet, as I am waiting until I get some more starters to distribute. (It'd be great to go out and get people psyched up about an excellent new game, but not have any way to get them started ) But as Kaitlin (my girlfriend) and I go out, we want to play against each other wherever we go. (It's quite the way to pass the time while you're waiting for your meal at a restaurant!)
And when we do play, naturally, it draws massive attention. I tell people a little about the game, and if they're interested, give them the website. We only really go out once a week, and this week I attracted the attention of a McDonald's employee/local college student that was simply ecstatic about the concept of the game, but also a kind elderly woman looking for a family game to play when they go on vacation. Quite interesting! They were very enthusiastic, so I decided to give away a common to each (as was suggested to me) and was amazed at how grateful they were. I also gave them each an extra rulebook that I wrote down my information on, so that they might look it over (since I haven't been able to make that set from the Demo Rules yet).
I got the idea to maybe make a small display, with a common and a monster from each race to display the wonderful variety of dice. I have this very small tackle box that would work well, I think, all I need is the dice! Don't we all need more dice
All this opportunity to spread Dragon Dice is killing me since I don't have any starters to distribute yet! I made my order, but I don't have instant-payment capabilities (I'm a little wary of online bank<->third party connections and whatnot) and with GenCon coming up, I'm trying not to hold my breath. Oh, but it is difficult, and Dragon Dice fever is a harsh affliction. |

Well if you look at the Championship pools I've started...you'll see allot of repeat dice.
So this gives you an idea as to which dice you may need to have a stock pile of.
As a general rule...
for collecting...
one or two of every dice is a challenge...especially with chaser dice. |

Ah, I see. So I'll want to have more of certain dice, just to be on the safe side? Also, what are chaser dice? Rare dice?? |

Chaser Dice
Some are harder to find than others....
I only have one Unseelie...
so that kills any notions of having 4 of everything
I only have 2 frost ogres
I have a few Coral Giants...be he's a chaser anyways.
The Magi...
grrrrrrrr don't get me started.... |

Well, it's nice that you at least have pictures of the dice to show off to those of us who may never see them |

Cliff my husband keeps 18 health of each unit. It is a massive collection but some of the more rare ones he doesn't have that many yet.
When he first learned this game we were into AvP and Terminator card games and one of my reps (I ran the program) was into Dragon Dice and he was telling me about how they taught him to play it at Gencon and then later he pointed out some guys pushing big dolly's around with big tackle boxes and said that is the game I learned. I said never. Famous last words since most of my basement is devoted to dice right now.
Really you keep as many as you think you might want at any given time. Some people only keep a few armies and then trade when they want to make a new one. Very much personal choice. That is one of the nice things about Dragon Dice. You don't have to have a massive collection if your desire or budget won't allow. You can still play with a small amount!
(He does have some Magi and wants a Orge if anyone is interested)

This is one of those topics that some people have very strong opinions about while others don't really care. Since I stopped counting somewhere around 6000 or 7000 dice, I'm not sure which of those categories I should be listed under.
My personal goal has been to have enough of every die to allow me to have a standard tournament size army (36 health) composed of all of the same unit. I don't think I've ever actually played with 36 health all of the same unit but I like to know that I could if I wanted to. I toyed with the idea of trying to have enough that I could have a Battlefest army (60 health) of any single unit but I decided that was excessive even for me.
A lot of people base the number on a typical tournament game of 36 health and a limit of 50% magicians which results in 18 health of each type.
As Tiffany pointed out, you don't have to have a huge number of dice to play the game. As long as you have enough dice to build the army (or armies) that you want, everything beyond that is "extra". _________________ John Koslow |

For me, its really about math. I am building a collection that has 12 health of each unit because that is the smallest collection I can build where each race's unit is represented without a "remainder". Exactly 3 of each monster, 4 of each rare, 6 of each uncommon, and 12 of each common (I disregard the fact that dragons are 5 health because their health value is really not relevant. You bring 1 dragon per 24 health in your army instead of working 5 health of dragons into your army. For the record, I collect 4 of each dragon, except the hybrids). An 18-health collection wouldn't do it for me (thankfully!) because monsters would be represented either too little at only 16 health for 4 or too much at 20 health for 5.
The caveat to the "12 health of each unit" is "must include at least 1 copy of any variation/version that was available to the general public". This is what has kept me from actually completing the collection so far, and keeps me searching still.

Shoesan,
It's good that you've set such a lofty goal, and are still searching! Because once you're at the top, the only way to go from there is down
Thanks everybody for their contribution to the thread! I enjoy getting many different peoples' points of view. |

Cliff and I may disagree with that due to basements that are full of dice. But we are special cases on that score..... _________________ You can never have too many dice.

I was at the end of my patience and financial expenditure searching for a particular chasers.
This almost ended my Dragon Dice Quest.
I paid $535 for the Unseelie.
I used my tax refund money, so that took away some of the pain.
I even complained to TSR about the Magi.
They were going to send me one...then I finally got one in a kicker...
so I emailed them. So they did not send one.
Parents don't want kids to get all caught up in chasers...as they think it's a trick to get them hooked and a way to get their money.
I even said I was not going to buy any Treefolk until I had a unicorn.
So I won an auction for $75 that was a full set.
Not sure why TSR had such an unbalanced rarity...
actually it may have been that the dice never made it into the boxes...
the Unseelie Fish tank theory..
who knows..all I know is that the game was not like that in the beginning...and to switch up rarities like that mid stream is just sheer cruelty to collectors...in my opinion anyways...and it was going to end my quest as well.
Another thing was the timing of the releases...Frostwings came out at Christmas..
so the extra cash for Dragon dice was killing the idea of any Christmas Presents.
After the Scalders it all stopped....
until SFR came out with Treefolk.
I still only have 1 unicorn..2 Ormys..2 Frost Ogree...1 Unseelie..
I think 3 magi..
and about 3 infernos.
Chuck gave me a Black inked Inferno for doing work on the Starter boxes..that was really nice of him.
So when we made the Alcoltyes..I was sensitive to the collector's point of view.
I mean what is terrible about chasers is buying and buying and buying...and getting the same thing.
With the Acolytes...even though it's a big set...
I don't think any one die is hard to get....
so trading will be high...
and the mix should be good so when you buy a box...even though you don't have the full set...you should get something new...
that's the plan anyways. |
