I know that there's another thread on this topic, but it seemed more worthwhile to me to post a new one than to resurrect a three year old thread.

How often are magic items (including the artifacts and medallions) used these days? In what sorts of armies are they most effective?

I've been liking the racial introduction threads in this forum and would sort of like to see one regarding magical items and their uses but, failing that, I'd settle for just getting some information about the sort of use they've seen in the last few years. Based on the last thread, they were on the decline and not seen very often in tournament play - particularly since getting rid of Charge/Rout made Speed Slippers less than necessary. Any information that you guys can provide would be great!

Gold and Bronze Medallions are used. I'm partial to Dragon Staffs. Occasionally you'll see a Trebuchet or Seven-League Boots. Generally speaking, you don't see them used too much.

I'm sure that 3-year-old thread probably covers the why not, since not much has changed with them in the last few years. Probably the biggest reason why you don't see them more is that they get buried when they cannot be carried - and the only way to get them back is with Dwarf magic or a Silver Medallion (which is yet another item to carry).

That said, try using one or two items in your army to see how they work for you. Like any other die in the game, there are people that like to use them and people that don't.

Well I use magic items.

One big advantage magic items provide is they can't be directly targeted...
well the common magic items can through explode stone.
Also when a magic item is lost it gets buried...
this can actually be helpful in away,
if you can retrieve magic items somehow as they don't have to go through the DUA...
so it's one less step to bring them back.

Ok another thing...
the real strong point for magic items is their ability to move with other dice...
so you can path a unit and carry a magic item...
or my favorite, ferry...which allows 4 health of units...
the Gryphon has ferry...
so besides the Gryphon being able to carry a magic item,
it can bring 4 commons...
each of them can bring magic items as well.

So each common could carry an artifact..
the gryphon could carry a medallion (if in an army that it does not match the magic items color)

so in an instant... 28 health could possible move from a single roll.

That's a quick turn of events.Wink

The medallions can be carried by any color units...
unlike the other magic items.
