Pertaining to the effects of magic against monsters, I was wondering if all SAIs protect against spells such as Lightning Strike.
It is an interesting dillema, of course. If only normal save protect from these spells, then the odds for monsters ar relatively poor, considering they have ten sides instead of six, though some monsters are better at saving than others.
If ALL SAIs count as saves against magic, then perhaps it is too difficult to zap them.
Could anyone clarify? |

You are confusing the normal saves of monsters, with an optional rule. Normally monsters save quite poorly against Lightning Strike. Only about 5 are any good against it. However, there is an old optional rule called "Monstrous Magic Resistance" that lets a monster save against any magic if it rolls a normal save or any SAI. Then as you point out, many monsters become almost impossible to zap. Also note that this only applies to saves from spells. This optional rule does not apply to saves needed when attacked via another SAI.
While this does have the effect of making monsters less useful, it also keeps them in check. Many of the monster SAIs are quite nasty if you are on the receiving end. |
