I’m going to use DragonDice as a mass combat resolution system in my D&D campaign. I’m using the standard rules. So far it looks pretty ideal. The basic armies are coral elves vs. goblins. The player characters are on the side of the elves of course.

I’ve built some simple armies. Can you build a powerful coral elf army? Here are the limitations:

  • 27 health of coral elves
  • 9 health of coral elves, treefolk, amazons, dwarfs, or magic items
  • 12 dragonkin
  • 2 dragons
  • Any major and minor terrains.
  • No promotional dice, Eldarim, dragonkin champions, or special terrains. Otherwise assume I have or can get any dice needed.

Coral Elves are the weakest race in general when it comes to saves. But they have a lot of missile. So the "other" dice you want to bring in with them should have a fair number of saves to help them out. Dragonkin of course give them a fair number of auto-saves.

However, if the Coral Elves get to pick the terrain, then they are very tough in Coastlands. The fact that they can convert their maneuvers into saves brings their average save value up quite a bit. That also lets them double their IDs in both green and blue.

Ok thanks. How about this list then:

  • Coral Elves: 3 Sharpshooters, 1 Bowman, 3 Eagle Knights, 2 Enchanters, 1 Conjurer
  • Treefolk: 1 Oaklord, 1 Lady Nereid, 3 Willowlings
  • Dragonkin blue: 1 Dragonsteed, 1 Dragonsentry, 1 Dragontroop
  • Dragonkin green: 1 Dragonsteed, 1 Dragonsentry, 1 Dragontroop
  • 1 blue drake, 1 green wyrm
  • 1 Coastland Tower, 1 Coastland Temple

agreed. I would bring two coastlands and either 50% missile and 50% cav or even 100% missile.

I love to tinker around with variations of Coral Elves because I so often hear people say "They're the weakest" - which I don't argue with too much in the face of how powerful and unique the *Later Races* ended up being (i.e., Frosties & Scalders). Chuck even said so here in this thread.

Because they're so maligned, perhaps, I've taken it to heart that there are ways to strengthen Coral Elves and use them consistently and effectively, even on a tournament level.

My advice:

~~ GRYPHONS
~~ HERALDS

Use those dice. Use multiples of them. The Gryphon's Ferry SAI will create the equivalent of a "Path" spell and allow your units to sneak over to that 7th face just like a Firewalker or a gold based magician. Seriously how many games have I won where the Ferry boat takes me over to an abandoned Frontier that has 3 or 4 dragons on it, and BAM! game over....? The list is too long to count.

And those Heralds..... They save better in coastland (thanks to the Counter SAI) and fight in melee range better than any other Coral Elf unit. Bring a set of 3 or 4 Heralds and watch what happens.

I'm not too keen on the idea of building Coral Elves toward their natural missile capacity.... even though it seems the organic construction to try.

The idea of making a MELEE Coral Elf army is more appealing. But it cannot be done without a certain quantity of the units mentioned above, in my opinion.

I recognize this is an older thread, but I find that an army made of coral elf light melee on a coastland is very hearty. Light melee seems to fair better in most cases that I have come across than heavy. Smite is neato but counter has a few more uses.

I'm running 24pts of 2pt cavalry and 12pts of the 1pt cavalry units and they honestly work well.
