So is magic really necessary to winning the game, with its direct damage and rezzing of the DUA can an army like the amazons or really any close combat designed army stand a chance. Can one win with no magic use at all?

well while i dont recommend a "no magic" army... there are certainly armies out there that can handle without having any magic at all...
as suggestions...
ive used an all wolfpack army and murdered my opponent outright with so much damage it got silly...

or try a feral army with "ganesh" the elephant folk. add two of him or three and roll for the trumpet... ive also taken out almost half of an army in one roll with those guys in a feral army... plus feralization is a cheap way to "bring out your dead"...

also swampstalkers have nasty poison with invaders, swamp giants, and swamp beasts that can kill and bury enemies plus with the possibility of mutation you are basically getting around having to cast magic to bury or trying to bring guys back if you can mutate...

lastly i'd add trolls. their regenerate can work with any army and its a free way to bring back the other lighting struck trolls that already got bob-bombed by magic...

anyway those are my ideas...

you could also toy with bringing in an army with fenhounds and trolls to do a stepped damage-regeneration-dispell magic-extra saving against burial army- with feralization as an option...

i think the hardest things to deal with a no magic army are firewalkers if they have blue options to move out of terrains for free while you are stuck in reserves moving to the next place to fight and any gold magic...the path to victory (which imop is the most undercost spell in the game for what it does <which>)

other than that it comes down to if the terrains are rolled low or high. magicians stuck on any terrain that isnt magic isnt going to normally bode well for them (the exception of course are cantrips into leaving/necromantic wave/open graves-- which does happen...)

well these are just my thoughts...

Thanx for the reply I'm still new to the game and am looking for diff. ways to play not just being confined to one strategy.

Magic is easy and popular, but not required. Many successful armies have been done without magic

Magic was the last aspect of the game I tried to understand (and I find it to be the most difficult mechanic to learn and incorporate as a strategy). I would say I'm "competant" at it, but not a master.

I won my first tournament without using any magicians, and I often use only one or two "magicians" (as defined by the rules). Magic is an important facet of the game to be familier with, and I've learned a lot from opponents that use lots of magicians.

I view magic as another "tool" for implementing your strategy and giving you access to options you would not otherwise have without it, so it's nice to have some some magic capability.

I was there for Dan's first National win, and he managed to be quite devastating without magic.

I've used some missile armies that weren't quite magic-free, but were very magic-light. (Scalders and Red Trueflyers work nicely against many armies, but can be overrun by fast melee armies.) My current, untested championship format army is also very magic-light, but uses a Gold Medallion for resurrection, and what magic it has is gold to get the TRtM/Path combo.
