Practicing for worlds has made me come to the conclusion that some teams and races simply cannot be played because of only half hour rounds. Because theme is speed to get faces or stall til time, straight up "killing" seems almost impossible with a half hour. With a lot of people stressing, it seems like turns are almost 5 minutes long some times. I am suggestioning (obviously not gencon) making worlds an all day event and have hour rounds. Has this been done before? I know it hinders sealed tournys (which im sure make much more money) but it makes me sad that I can't play what I want because of something silly like short time

In the past, the rounds have usually been 45 minutes, giving four or five rounds in the tournament. Taking your turn quickly is something you'll need to do for tournaments.

Making it an all day event is a no-go. From my personal experience, very few people spend their entire time at Gencon playing Dragon Dice, and it is not unusual for some people to leave before a four-hour tournament is finished. If it was an all day event, we would get very few people playing, and probably most would leave before the tournament was finished.

In particular,
judging system and time restraints tends to lead to certain armies not being able to unfold...

let's look at Mire...
I like the spell,
and in the past, when health determined tie breakers,
it made sense to keep a player from getting an 8th...
but as I have stated...
if you want to win the worlds you need a perfect record.

I had 2 straight wins (3 points)
and one win that had a single 8th (time ran out) 2 points
and I tied with Dan

So that meant that Dan must have won all 3 games with straight wins...
I'm not sure if Dan even knew a tie would win.

Anyways...
I feel armies are not truly tested in 45 minutes.

So you need 2 8th faces in 45 minutes.

Dan tends to win the maneuver...
and then wipes out his opponent in the first round.
(as terrain tend to come up melee and his army by design is a melee army)

In my case I won the manuever (horde roll)
so I was not destroyed in the first round...
and I relied on blue breath (flash flood path)
since we both had 8ths...
it really seemed like the only way to win.

I would rather see single elimination...
at least you then just keep fighting your opponent,
so if you are alive...you can still win...
rather than be subjected to a point system that some players monitor.

A 45 minute round is usually ample time to finish most matches. If there is a disruption during an event I'm running (such as at DEXCON or DREAMATION), I'll extend the duration of the round to cover the lost time.

Magic-heavy armies tend to require more time to resolve their rounds, both to account for all the magic rolled and color-options permitted, as well as selecting spells and deciding how to get the most out of the magic available, and that's a part of the game. When rounds start taking significantly more time than 5 minutes with less than 15 magic to decide what to do with, then it might be time encourage your opponent to be mindful of the time.

Time management is an element of the game as well.

The Swiss scoring was put into place for a simple reason: It lets people play more Dragon Dice.

With Single Elimination, you show up for a 4-hour time slot, and then if you lose, you are done in an hour.... Not much fun. With Swiss, you may not win a lot of games, but at least you get to play, and by playing you learn how to play better. While I love to win, playing is really the best part. I'd rather play and lose than end up done early.

I agree with Chuck.

I tend to lose my first round before I get into the mental game.

In swiss this drops me to the losers bracket, but I can then win most of my games to come back to at least 3rd or I can even tie for first in some cases.

I don't think anyone mentioned no swiss...I was just saying longer rounds. I completly agree no one wants to lose first round and be done. Is it possible to do 45 minute rounds next year?

its something we can consider, but you might only get to play 4 rounds in a 4 hour event.

We've found in years past that you can have a lot of ties (on points) in the 3rd and 4th rounds and you really need a few more to get a clear winner.

Lets discuss this at gencon with some real data from those events.
