|
|
Where might one find the army building rules for the various events at GENCON?
I looked in the Event section of the main page, but that still listed GENCON 2010, which does not take into account the multi-player event, or special terrains.
I saw some forum post that talked about dividing dice into "basic" and "advanced," but then which events allow advanced dice?
Thanks! |

Thanks! | Not a dumb question at all. Let me write up a nice description of each event here to answer that question and update the website to point to this forum topic. _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |

If anyone can prove me wrong, please do and I will edit this post to be correct and keep this thread clean. It can be easy to mistype something.
The novice events are both (dice provided and returned).
The sealed events are all (dice provided and carried away).
The constructed events are what you are curious about. Really this is little different than in years past, the terminology is just slightly different to get away from the term 'Magestorm!' which doesn't exist anymore.
For easy reference, here are the event descriptions:
| Quote: |
Dragon Dice™: World Championship
4 Hours, 1-12 players, Materials NOT Provided, Much experience required, $4 Ticket or 2 Generics
Bring your 36-health army (no more than 18-health of magicians) and compete for the title of Dragon Dice™ World Champion! Swiss Format.
Sat @ 2pm
|
This is the simplest event. All dice are allowed, just like in years past. As part of the normal rules you can have no more than half magic users. Also the Dragon Crusader (released earlier this year) will be legal for this event, but the Zealots will not.
The event will be a normal Swiss format. This means that players will be paired randomly the first round and play a single game. You score points based on the result of that match and then players are sorted (winners play winners, losers play losers) and you repeat for as many rounds as can fit in the allotted 4 hours. If there is an odd player, then a random player each turn gets the 'bye'. You will never play the same opponent twice. The tournament director (John Koslow for this year) will have final say on all pairings where players are tied on points.

Dragon Dice™: Multi-Player
4 Hours, 1-12 players, Materials NOT Provided, Some experience required, $4 Ticket or 2 Generics
The enemy of your enemy is your ally… for now. The entire game changes when battling more than one opponent. Bring your 36-health army (no more than 18-health of magicians). All matches will be a multi-player format. Multi-Player Swiss Format.
Thurs @ 7pm
|
This is just like the Worlds format except that all games will be 3 or 4 player games instead of two.
The tournament director will do all the pairings based on the number of players who show up. Just like in Swiss, winners play winners. You may play against a single opponent in more than one pairing, but not the same exact combination of opponents. There will be no 'byes', every player plays every round. If a 4 player game is required then it will be decided based on points and a roll of the die when required. John's word will be final for this event.

Dragon Dice™: Battlefest
4 Hours, 1-12 players, Materials NOT Provided, Some experience required, $4 Ticket or 2 Generics
This event isn't for the timid or weak! Bring your toughest 60-health army and join the night's battle of blood and mayhem. Bring a 60-health army composed of any combination of tournament legal dice. None of the normal army construction limits, including limitations on the number of magic users or number of any individual die, apply. Swiss format.
Sat @ 7pm
|
This is similar to Worlds format, but you are not restricted by the number of magic users or the number of Eldarim Champions. This event does not mean you can bring unlimited dragons or use special terrains as your home. Those are not 'army construction limits'.

Dragon Dice™: No Magicians!
4 Hours, 1-12 players, Materials NOT Provided, Some experience required, $4 Ticket or 2 Generics
Sharpen your blades, restring your bows, and ready your cavalry. Esfah will be a battleground this day, not a playground for magicians! Bring a 36-health army, but don't include any magicians in this brutal slug fest. Expansion and Promo dice are not in use for this tournament. Swiss format. The following exceptions to the Standard Rules apply: No magic-using dice are allowed. (Any which has a magic or cantrip icon counts as a magic-using die)
Thurs @ 2pm |
This is where the construction gets more interesting. It is similar to Worlds with two exceptions.
The first is easy. Any die with a magic icon or a cantrip icon is not allowed.
The second is where we introduce our new terminology: Expansion and Promo Dice. These dice are easily identified in the rulebook under the sections in the 'Advanced Rules' section specifically called 'Expansions' and 'Promotional Dice'. For easy reference let me list them here, these are the dice that are not allowed in this event.
All Minor Terrains.
All Special Terrains.(i.e. the gold ink ones.)
Any DragonKin (Including DKin Champions)
Any Magic Items
Any Artifacts
The King's Die
Any medallions
Any Hybrid Dragons (note: this may have been played incorrectly in 2010)
Any Ivory Hybrid Dragons
White Dragons
Just to make it clear, in years past the Eldarim Champions (Lords,Masters,Slayers,Hunters) were considered promotional. These are now considered part of the Eldarim race and are restricted only in the number of each you can bring. (ie same as number of dragons)
Based on the release dates, the DragonCrusader is a tournament legal Eldarim Champion for Gencon2011, but the DragonZealots will not be.
Finally, the new terrain combinations (feyland and wasteland) are treated just like the other terrains (highland, swampland, etc) and will be legal in all events.
| Quote: |
Dragon Dice™: Single Race
4 Hours, 1-12 players, Materials NOT Provided, Some experience required, $4 Ticket or 2 Generics
Bring a 36-health army composed entirely of units from your favorite race, with at most 4 commons, 3 uncommons, 2 rares and 1 monster of any type, and fight it out. Expansion and Promotional dice are not in use for this tournament. Swiss format
Fri @ 9am
|
Just like SingleRace, 'Expansion and Promo Dice' are not legal for this event.
In addition you are restricted to the number of each 'type' of dice. i.e. no more than 4 common mages, no more than 3 uncommon mages, etc...
The term 'type' is used because of the Acolytes. A Sprinter (common cavalry) is a Sprinter. The icons on the die and the color of the die do not make it a different Sprinter. So you can have 4 Sprinters total.
The description of this event contains a slight ambiguity in wording. The Eldarim have no 'Monster' but the Champions of that race are considered their monsters (ie 4 pt units). Thus you can have at most 1 of each 'type'. Just to say it clearly... the DragonLord and the DragonMaster are the same 'type'. so only one of them.
