Partly testing the new forum. Partly just being onry. Twisted Evil

What consitutes a 'legal' die? I'm not talking about misprints like the goblins or the very rare terrains. I'm talking about mismade dice.

Once I pulled a die out of a starter that had a 'spur' on it. The raw material had oozed between the two halves of the mold and the tumbling process had not broken it off.

Obviously this would not be considered a 'legal' die because it affects the tumbling, but what about those cases in between? When is a die no longer considered 'fair'

Some of the Hunters have air bubbles. One reason we won't use that company again. Some of the bubbles caused the faces to be rounded. Some popped during cooling and caused the face to sink in. I have one die where the air bubble was so big that its only half as tall as it is wide.

When is a rounded face too rounded? When is normal variation too much?

There is no answer, but have fun discussing it.

Hi,

I would expect to be able to return dice that are so badly formed they are not playable...

But apart from that, for a social game I think I would allow any dice to be played.

Of course if I then happen to lose, I would of course contest that the win was unfair because of those "loaded dice". Very Happy

In tourny environnent, I guess any visible deformity (I do hope that is a word) would be a nono...

wkr,

Anset

I bought dice on ebay that were clearly misshapen. At first I thought I was imagining things, but now this confirms that there are some out there. What is the origin of these? I doubt that anyone would bother to counterfiet them, so did TSR really sell them rather than take them out of circulation?

For the record, the offending dice were mostly goblins.

TSR would have never seen them. The dice for everything except the promo dice were made in Hong Kong, and by the time they got to the US, they were already bagged, boxed, shrink-wrapped, and put into cases.

The promo dice are another matter, and that's what Cliff is talking about. The really bad ones never made it into circulation from SFR. The only misshapen promo dice I've seen are the Dragonmasters, and I'd guess those went straight from the die manufacturer to Interplay games that put them into the Dragon Dice video game.

I have a Blue DKC with sides that bubble out. It's not a major flaw, and I don't use it in games (I've never tested to see if it's fair). I would imagine there may be a few like this out there.

How about unpolished dice? They're rare outside of the prototypes, but I do have one unpolished Ashbringer. Aside from having very sharp edges, I don't think this would be an unfair die. Of course, I have it safely tucked away in my dice case, never to see actual game use anyway.

Correct. I've never noticed mishaped dice from Hong kong, just from the DKC run.

I pulled this one from the 'trash' box because it was the worst in the bunch.

I've noticed a few of the goblin commons are slightly different sizes, but never really bad.

As for unpolished dice?... I have one that did go through the tumbler, but it still has one VERY sharp edge that sticks out. I think the mold didn't completely close on that pressing. (Its a lava elf common).
