Based n my understanding of damage a player must spend every point of damage if able to. For example I have two comons, one uncommon, and one rare unit. My opponent rolls three damage. I could either assign it to one uncommon and one common or to the rare, but couldnt assign it to the to the two commons and say the last point is a wash. Is this correct.

Yes, it's correct. You must use every damage point if possible.
