How does Bash work, if the attacking army had only smites ?

Bash would do nothing in that case. Here's the key text: "During a save roll against a melee attack, choose a unit in the attacking army that generated normal melee results." Note that Smite generates special melee results, so it cannot trigger Bash. Rend, Counter (during a melee roll, not a save roll), Double Strike, Sneak Attack (during a melee roll), Flurry, Tail, and Trample; all generate normal melee results and those results can be affected by Bash. _________________ You can never have too many dice.
