I just found this game last week, and I am impressed with how fast and easy it is to play. (no painting or glue involved).

My question is this. If an army does not have any magic casters, can it still cast spells by using the id's of those present or is the army out of luck.
*note: the same would go for melee and archer icon on the terrain dice.

To me it would seem if you don't have the unit you can't perform the action. Is this the case?

You can always try any kind of action. The ID counts for whatever results you are trying to get. I've argued elsewhere that this represents the general training of the troops, that allows them to do anything, even if they specialize in something else.

There are some dice that aren't rolled in certain circumstances (such as dragonkin against a dragon of the same color, or magic items in reserves), but as long as you have units you can always try. Otherwise, the Undead would never be able to shoot at all!

Each unit has a chance at doing something, even if they don't have a particular icon. Units that have a particular icon (like magic) are much better at performing that type of action since they have "specialized" in that but they still have a chance when they try something else because the ID counts as whatever action you are rolling for.

Not only can a non-magic unit generate magic when it rolls an ID, it is also eligible for magic doubling if it meets the doubling conditions.

Example: a handful of Trolls at a Swampland terrain. The trolls aren't magic units, but every Troll that rolls an ID can double gold magic (because of the terrain), generating 8 points of gold magic with each ID rolled. The Trolls rolling IDs can also double black magic, following the rules for black magic doubling.

I now understand the premise behind the icon face.

In the mentioned example of the undead not being able to shoot, that would give the undead player all the more reason to want to out maneuver his opponent to get the face of the terrain dice changed.

Anyways, I don't intend to beat a dead horse over it. The icon face at least gives you a chance no matter what is showing on the terrain. got ya!

Now if I can only buy more dice from a store that isn't 400 miles away

Wink
