Okay, having played several tournaments this weekend, a discussion was started about dragon slaying and the rewards gained. Sure, getting a bunch of promotions is kind of cool, but when all you have in the DUA is 1h commons, you're hosed.
Our thought is this (and I may have posted this long ago on the old listserve), but what about a very small alteration to the rule that allows a 1h recruitment (and only 1h!) if no promotions are possible? The Springs players have used this as a house rule for years to the oint where we almost forgot that it wasn't tournament legal.
Much discussion could come up with no reason why this would make the game unblanced in any way, but we want everyone else to chime in their thoughts.
So, what do you think? _________________ The Maj

Sounds like a good suggestion to me. It's always kind of annoying when you slay a dragon and get nothing for it because there's nothing in your DUA but commons.

Perhaps when we update the rules for next year. Yes, it's annoying, but I don't see anything that's broken either. _________________ You can never have too many dice.

Well, that's a better answer than I got last time.
We thought of the another one, and this would be a tournament rule only, and only in a multi-player game.
I have no idea who first used the staggered start house rule (all but last player get 1 march first turn), but it's a good one, especially if there are more than two players. This weekend I've seen several occassions when the last acting player was almost out of the game by the time they got to make their first march.
It seems that in tournament play, you should either restrict game to two players, or use the staggered start option with more.
Not trying to start an argument or whine about how it cost me a game (it didn't), but it sort of makes sense.

Almost all of the tournament games are two-player. That's how the Swiss tournament format goes. The only one that's different is the final round of the World Championship, that uses the Alpha format. That's also why the rules recommend no more than four player games. _________________ You can never have too many dice.

But it's also annoying if you want to use racial abilities like feralization, stepped damage etc, etc....and you don't have anything in your DUA! Can't double black magic if the DUAs are empty(except with a Deadlands spell)! And so on, and so on....
Where do you want to start? Can't change the whole game! _________________

This is also true, however, it has nothing to do with a dragon attack, which was the point. Your army slew a dragon, and because you have all 1h in your army, you get no reward unless it was a wyrm that rolled treasure first.
Slaying a dragon currently allows for multiple promotions as a reward if the acting player has larger units in the DUA. Giving the a single 1h recruit for a dragon slaying seems like a fair reward if they lack larger units for promotion. It won't change the whole game, just a very small part of one specific action.
Okay, I've opened enough canned worms (or is that wyrms?) for one day. I've said my say and I'm letting it drop.
Carry on. _________________ The Maj

Actually what Joe said, has helped me decide. We (we being the rules committee of SFR) were trying to encourage people to use different rarities of dice. Allowing common recruitment from killing a dragon would be a step backwards to the old all common armies. Since we want to discourage that, there is no way that we would ever want to add recruitment to killing a dragon. _________________ You can never have too many dice.
