Here's a question we had about Single Race construction: Since it is limited only by the size and type of dice, are you free from magician limitations? Robert won the SR event at Origins by playing Undead, and using both heavy and light magic units. That gave him more magic than the other armies, and his black m agic proved deadly. I believe this is a perfectly legal army (and one to watch out for, despite it's other limitations). Mike D. OK'd it, and no one disagreed. Were we right? _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun

The 50% limit on magicians is normally in effect for any constructed army (except Battlefest) which would include the single race tournament. We had discussed counting the Undead Light mages as only half their point value for magic purposes but I'd have to go back and see if that made it in to the published rules. _________________ John Koslow |

Singe race does not have the restriction of 50% mages maximum. For all races except Undead, with the restriction of no more than 4 common, 3 uncommon, 2 rare and 1 monster of the same type, it's nearly impossible to go much over the 50%. So ignoring the monster, that gives you 16 health of mages. Firewalkers can get quite a bit of magic as well. Here's the breakdown by race:
Coral Elves: 19 (Sprite Swarm)
Dwarves: 18 (Androsphinx)
Goblins: 18 (Death Naga)
Lava Elves: 19 (Beholder and Rakshasa)
Amazons: 16
Firewalkers: 27 (Fireshadow, Genie, and Salamander)
Undead: 34 (Light mages, Dracolich)
Feral: 20 (Bear-Folk and Owl-Folk)
Swampstalkers: 18 (Ormyrr)
Frostwings: 19 (Frost Ogre)
Scalders: 22 (Will 'o Wisps and Unseelie Faerie)
Treefolk: 18 (Satyr)
So they are evenly matched, except Firewalkers and Undead. It's too late now for a rule change, but perhaps for next year, we need one. Any comments? _________________ You can never have too many dice.

Given their other problems (lack of saves for FW, lack of missiles and maneuvers for UD), I'd say let them keep their magical advantages. Besides, to get the max, you have to use some seldom-used monsters. Unless one of these races becomes the terror of Single Race, I vote for keeping it the way it is. _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun
