| Hmm, I can't believe I missed this before today. Since units can't cast magic from reserves at enemy armies, I always assumed that enemies can't target another player's reserves with magic. Apparently I was wrong and many spells such as Dancing Lights and Lightning Strike just target an enemy army or unit. From the rules it appears that you can cast these spells at an enemy's reserves. Is this correct? If so, why can reserves be targetted by enemies while a reserves army can't target thier enemies? |

You can cast spells that target units or armies that do not specifically say "at a terrain." One of the forgotten spells that can be useful this way is Hailstorm. When a player tries to sneak 1 or 2 health through reserves, a nice Hailstorm can clean them out quickly.
Why can't you cast harmful magic from reserves? Think about it in game terms. You'd end up with players hiding in reserves, sending dragons hither and yon, lightning and FoD everywhere, without anyone being able to target them with anything else BUT magic. It would make missile and melee units nearly obsolete. The only recourse would be to move your own units back to reserves and fire back. It's a game play issue more than anything else. By making reserves alittle riskier, it keeps players from spending more time than absolutely necessary there.
Over the years there have been proposals to make reserves a "safe haven" for armies trying to recover. I went on record at one point against this, because my son (besides Pelters) loves Undead. He could hide his UD melee units in reserves, where nothing could happen to them, then bring them out when a terrain got to 6 or 7 and slaughter whoever fought their way there. If you want to fight, come out and fight, or risk getting zapped while you hide. _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun

Just be thankful missles aren't allowed into the Reserves. Historically, most reserve units were within missle range (and we won't even go into what a Multiple Launched Rocket System can do to your reserve area today )
