The new SFR 2-player Starter will be published soon.
If this were available for the next Gen Con attended by SFR,
how would it work in a Sealed Box Tournament?

Would the players get to decide which box of the 4 different mixes they will use to create their army?

I feel it will work, because of the structure of the format.
If you do have a great army and make it into the finals,
you will receive another Sealed Box to create a new army.

Make the box selections random for the first round,
and then in the finals (4 players)....perhaps
all 4 versions must be used. Cool

As they currently stand, all the official Tournament Rules for Sealed Box says is that each player must purchase a starter set to use for the tournament. They will not be able to change their set later in the event.

What this probably means (and I'll find out soon, since I hope to run a new starter Sealed Box early next year) is that each player will purchase a Starter of their choice, use the 30h of units plus their choice of two terrains and one dragon from that box, and that will be their army. An alternate suggestion is to allow players to build a 24h army from the 30h of units they will have.

One other possibility is that players will get choice of starters available for the event. For example, if I'm running a Sealed Box and only have one case of starters, players could only choose from that case. Given the likely distribution of starters in a case, that would mean that if three players chose Coral Elf/Lava Elf, a fourth player could not use them, but would have to choose one of the remaining sets. Choice would probably be done on a first-come, first-served basis (either by registration or by showing up for the event).

And, as a teaser, let me suggest to any players on the East Coast that they might want to leave the weekend of Jan. 26-28, 2007 open...but nothing's official yet.

I am only speaking from my experience and research.

The first round called Sealed Deck Qualifier has one box unchangeable.
The Sealed Deck finals has a new box.

This was the Gen Con format for 1996 and when I played in 2006

I understand the Case Limitation would be the first priority.

Mark A Wiker's website shows Qualifier and Final Champion Armies for sealed box, as different armies in the same Tournament.
Each finalist is given a new group of dice to create their final army.

I just thought since their were 4 finalist, and 4 boxes to choose from,
and the finalist were given new dice for the Finals,
that it would be a fun ending to the tournament having the entire set battle for the title.

I wasn't aware of the past split at GenCon, having never been there. Every Sealed Box I played, you kept the same set(s) for the entire event.

If there were to be a change between Qualifier and Finals, I would take away a player's ability to choose their set, and instead have some kind of random draw for them in both events. The problem with this is that the new starters will cost more (since they are, after all, two-player sets now), and given that there are specific races in each box, I think players should have some chance to get what they want (or maybe even need for their collections).

I'm sure there's going to be some hashing out to do before the 2007 Tournament Rules are finalized.

First of all, the cases of starters will not be mixed. Each case of starters will have only one type in it. Of course the tournament organizer could buy a mix of starters, and make it first-come, first-served.

Second, the reason for the two different starters in the past was that the qualifier and the finals were on two different days. You'll notice that this year, I scheduled the Sealed Box qualifier and an hour after it ended, the finals. So the tournament organizer merely had to keep track of the starters for an hour before they are used again. Then no one has a chance to "change" their starter.

Third, I see no reason to have the players pay twice for the event. That just sucks if you get into the finals, that you have to pay more to play in it.

All that said, yes, we need to talk about the format for the Sealed box. I'd be willing to talk about setting it up so that you have the 30 health of units, 4 terrains, and 2 dragons, but only use 24 health, 2 terrains, and 1 dragon to play. And you can before each game, take any of your original forces and try it differently. So if you left out one of the monsters in your first game, and decide maybe the it would work better than the monster you kept, you can change it for your second game.

Or another thought would be to do a sealed box, with one starter and one SFR* kicker. Then make up a 36-health army out of the 45 health (and three races!). Of course, we would have kickers and starters available at a discount (around half price) just for this event. Show your event ticket to get the discount.

* Because of the zillions of TSR Firewalker kickers we have, the TSR Firewalker kicker would also be allowed as well as the SFR kickers.

In 2006 SFR did provide the Dice for the Finals in the Sealed Box.
You could buy them if you wanted.I did.

I like the Sealed Box Plus Idea Chuck has mentioned.
perhaps allowing a second starter as a kicker might work,
if you like a certain race, you could get 2 rares the same.
Or it would allow a more predominant uncommon /common force of a specific die.

Actually my point was to make sure no one got too many of the same race. So you start with the starter, and add a racial kicker that is not of the same race as any starter.

The Original Starter had 23 points of Health
In the 1996 Sealed Box Tournament armies were constructed
from 2 starters creating a 24 point army

Presently, a Sealed Box tournament could be:
two starter boxes, either random or not allow the same kind,
if not allowing the same kind was used, then

The 24 point army from one starter box would
implicate 6 points would not be used,
forcing the use of 1 monster.
This may be fun,I like monster,
but some poeple don't play with monsters.

I would not want to see a two-starter Sealed Box, mainly due to cost. Even if SFR can let starters go at around 50% off, anyone else running a SB would have to charge more in order not to lose money on running an event. (I'm vacillating on what SB will cost, with only one starter, at the event I'm planning for January, but it will be more than half price.) Keeping SB at one starter will keep it as an affordable option for relatively new players, who will get dice they want, a fairly simple tournament format, and not have to shell out big bucks to play.

Can you allow "ONE" optional Promo Dice as a force?
ie Medallion,Dragonlord,Kings die, Dragonmaster,DragonHunter/Slayer

Only 1 Starter box and 1 promo die

this way if you are forced to use a monster,in a 24 point game
perhaps a King Die would suit a player better
or a Medallion,or Master

No. The whole idea behind any "sealed" event, is that you get whatever comes in the box. Having any promo dice allowed would make it unfair to a new player that just wanted to try it out.

That said, I could see us having a special event that took a new promo die that SFR was offering, and making it part of a sealed box event. But that would be special case, not a normal case.

Can the Sealed Box be 30 points?
This way, the player plays with the dice they get in the box.
I always wanted a Sealed Box to be played this way.

Everyone starts out the same,no switching.
Only the terrains and dragon would be the options

Sure we could. But then you have to bring both dragons. And if both dragons are ones you couldn't use, then more likely than not, you've given your opponent a big advantage. At 24-health, you only need 1 dragon, and odds are good that you'd be able to use at least one dragon.

At least with 4 terrains in the box, you always have a choice of terrains.

With random dragons and a required 2 dragons,
a 30 point army seems risky,
if the dragons were coordinated with the armies colors,
then 2 dragons and 30 points could work.

So 24 points is the best with random dragons.

This is from Mark A. Wiker's 1996 Sealed Box Champion Army

Spider Rider (enslaved)

I've never seen enslaved even mentioned before.

perhaps the extra 6 health could be referred to as "enslaved"

Are the terrains and dragons switchable? or is that unchangeable

The way it works is that you can start a game with any 24-health of the 30-health from the box. Any 2 terrains of the 4. And 1 dragon of the 2. In theory you could start each game with a different mix of the original box.

BTW, many people don't get this either. In any SFR tournament, the dice you start the tournament with, are the dice you have to play for the entire tournament. But you do not have to setup your dice the same way for every game. If you want to switch your home and proposed frontier terrain from one game to the next, that's fine. But you can't bring in a new one. Same for your home, campaign and horde armies. If for one game you only put one health in the home, but in the next you decide to put just one health in your horde, that's up to you, and perfectly legal.

So just think of the sealed box starter the same way, you just have a pool of "unused" dice for each game.

I suspect that Mark was using "enslaved" as a joke, since the rest of his army was Goblins. That would certainly fit his style.
