Routing was the great unknown. It was the fumble. there was always a chance that the "morale" of your troops would break. This would give a smaller opposing army a very slight chance of surviving an attack by nullifying the counter attack.
It will be very sorely missed.
I know the "you are free to play any house rules". (the whole year of 97 we liked to play you had to capture and hold to win. when one person got two terrains they had to hold both till the beginning of their next turn, this gave all the other players one last chance to come together against the greatest threat.)
But as local reps here we play the game as the rule book shows as we are constantly teaching new players the game. We are not comfortable with saying "and we like to play like this" if it isn't listed in the rules. Even being listed as just an optional rule we could show new players and they would accept that it was an officially recognized way of playing as long as it was made clear that was how the game was going to be played before hand.
We may have to wear a 5 colored arm band (with an ivory border) in mourning over this change. _________________ Bryan Brauser

I can't say I'll miss it too much. In our games, if we remembered to check, armies rarely routed. I could be fun to attack the same army several times in a row, but turning the terrain down like that just slows the game down. _________________ "Everything Brad said is correct." - Chuck Pint |

It wasn't the chasing that we liked, it was the chance of being able to melee attack and not get counter-attacked. now and then we would chase, especially if we had just lost a maneuver roll and intended to bring the dice down because either we wanted magic so we could bring in some dragon kin before moving it up, or because we were planning on abandoning that terrain and needed to make the other armies take another turn to get it to the 8th face.
In our groups we have sooooo many players that duals (2 player games) is actually the rarity and multiple 4 players games are the norm. strategy is much different in 4 player games. _________________ Bryan Brauser
