From the newest rules PDF:

"...During a dragon attack or melee avoidance roll, Smite generates melee results..."

Ok, so, my buddy's army launches a melee attack against me. I make my melee avoidance roll, and generate three Smites. Those become melee results against him at that point? Does he get to save against them? Or do only magical saves count?

Thanks!

You're confusing the terminology - a save roll and a melee avoidance roll are two completely different things.

When your army is attacked in melee, your army makes a save roll. Smite does nothing during a save roll.

A melee avoidance roll is made when your army/unit needs to generate melee results to avoid an effect. The Web SAI and Wall of Thorns spell are examples of a melee avoidance roll.

An avoidance roll is when you are avoiding an effect other than straight damage. When you are trying to not be effected by straight damage you roll a save roll.

An example of a save avoidance roll is the roll you make against Lightning Strike. Lightning Strike does not do damage, but it does have an effect (killing the unit). But note that it does not matter how many points of save. There is also no mention of points of damage.
