Ok, we are running events at GenCon. Now I need people to run the events. Here's the deal. You volunteer to run 2 events (8 hours of work), and you will get your GM's badge reimbursed. So while you'll have to pay $60 for a badge like everyone else, if you run 2 events, you'll get the $60 back. I'm looking for help for everything except the World Championship event, Night of the Living Dead, and half the Novice tournaments. Contact me if you want to help. Ask any questions you might have here. Thanks!

What qualifications would a potential GM need? For example, if it is just a matter of helping people out with basic questions and in general serving to "keep the peace", I'd be qualified. But if you want someone who can answer "What happens when spells X and Y are active, and I try to cast spell U and spell V?" then I'm not so sure. If I volunteered, I'd do my best to brush up on all the spells, etc., beforehand. So are you mostly looking for the people who have been playing 10 years+, or warm bodies?

Solid knowledge of the rules is always a requirement for any GM for any game. Mostly it would be keeping time, scoring, and setting up the rounds. So to answer the question you asked, I'm looking for something in between. I think it would be safe to say, that if someone asked a really tough rules question, someone would be there that could answer it. But any GM should be able to answer all the basic stuff. For the Novice games, it's more a matter of being a good teacher. We're hoping to get people that have never (or next to never) played the game. So you'll have to lead people thru the play, while letting them play the game. It's not as easy as it sounds. I'm sure a few people that hang around here that teach can second that.

Second, third, and fourth that.

I have a low tolerance for people who don't 'get it', and conventions are a trying time for me.

Some demo-ers don't really want to be there (spouses, etc), some are just argumentative and try to ask questions before you have explained everything, some play dumb on purpose just to give you a hard time.

You meet all sorts while demoing. It's not always easy.

But still, in my experience, at the end of the day, strangly fullfilling... Very Happy

Just keep the people that think a demo = day-care center for spoiled kids, away... Sad

There is only a week left for submitting events to GenCon. I do not have GMs for the following events:

Novice Tournament: Thur, Fri, Sat noon, Thur, Fri, Sat, 2pm
Single Race: Thur noon
Team Tournament: Thur 5pm
No Magicians!: Thur 9pm
Sealed Box Qualifier: Fri 5pm
Misfit Monster Bash: Sat noon
Battlefest: Sat 9pm

All of these events will be canceled if I do not have GMs by April 9.

Chuck,

I'm willing to do whichever events need someone to fill in, with the caveat that I'm not interested in doing 5 pm events.

In particular, I think we definitely need to keep the Saturday events, especially Battlefest.

Let me know where you need me to fill in!

If we're going to be succesful in bringing the game back, I don't think we can afford to cancel any of the Novice Tournaments; that's where our new blood is going to come from.

Hopefully somebody will volunteer for the Sealed Box and Battlefest events. Those are the two that I'd actually like to play in instead of running. I can cover anything else if I'm not already running another event. (I don't have the schedule of what I've already volunteered for in front of me.)

I've already volunteered to GM the Sealed Box Qualifier and Misfit Monster Bash. I could GM another event or two, but I'd really like to play too.

Ok, I submitted all the events last week, and I checked today. We have all the events. I'm updating the events page with the event code. I'll also tag it with the GM for each event. I've still got a few events "floating", so we could still use some help. If you see () after an event, I still need a GM for that event. A few people told me that they wanted to see what other events they could play in besides Dragon Dice, so those may be taken yet.
