Is SFR looking for people to volunteer at Origins? Besides myself, there'll be a few people I'm sure that would love to help with demonstrations or act as judges at tournaments (yes, Steve, I know I'll have to know the new rules).
I'm not working for any other company, and not really competing in anything, so I'll have some time on my hands, and let's be honest, time spent working means I'll spend less $$ and not have to face an irritated wife when I get home.
Thanks! _________________ The Maj

I know you guys at SFR are concentrating on Gencon, but what about Origins? I have some extra time available that I could use to help out.
Anyone, anyone.... Bueller? _________________ The Maj

Origins doesn't do things the same way as GenCon. As matter of fact, I couldn't find much at all there. But if you do 16 player-hours (which they don't define very well), you get a free badge. Here's the contact person to talk to:
Collectable and Tradable Card Games (CCGs/TCGs) - Larry Bryant ccgs@gama.org
GenCon does it based on the number of players the event is designed for, not by how many people show up. Origins doesn't define it at all. Also you want to talk to Mike Dezearn (MikeD) about helping. He's running Origins. I don't know what he has in mind. I do see the deadline is April 10. |

Generally, you must run 16 hours of events for the con. I believe that is they way they did it. It didn't matter how many players are registered, just how many hours of events you ran.

What I found out is that Origins will give a free admission to anyone who runs 16 hours of events, but their standard event time is 3 hours and 45 minutes, so if you run 4 events you are 1 hour short! So in reality, you must run 5 each 3.75 hour events to qualify for the free admission. This is stated in the fine print in some of the GM info I received when I arrived and was confirmed by the CCG event director who stated that I was "golden" after I turned in the results from my 5th event. The GM registration process at Origins was a nightmare with them claiming their database had "lost" a number of events when I showed up and as a result I didn't have a GM badge to pick up Wednesday afternoon (after standing in lines for over 3 hours to get said badge) I finally got the badge Thursday morning, just before the first tourney was to begin. The CCG event director was very helpful, but I was not impressed with the Origins registration process. Of course others may have had a different experience.

The one big downer of Origins was our registration. I pre-registered, but when I got through the long pre-reg line I was short one set of event tickets. I stood in another longer customer service line, gave them my information, and was told my tickets would be printed the next morning and to come pick them up. I stood in another long line to pick them up, and NOTHING had been printed yet. I did get generic tickets, which were fine for the events I was in (none were in any danger of selling out), but I might have done better registering on-site, and that's not a good thing.
The rest of the weekend went much better, though. _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun
