Believe it or not, it's nearly time for SFR to register games for GenCon. So I'm starting this topic and I want to hear from people who think they may make it to GenCon.

Basically, what in the way of Dragon Dice format games do you want to play?

Just a quick update on GenCon. Event registration starts on February 3. Because of the fact that they are remodeling the convention center, there will be less space there than last year. If we want to have space to run any events, I'm considering February 3 as the deadline for our events. So speak up now on what you want to play.

OK, I'll start off with a list of games I want to see:

World Championship (duh)
Battlefest
Single Race
Sealed Starter Box
No Magicians!

Of course we will have Novice Tournaments at least 3 times on Thursday-Saturday, once on Sunday.

As you know I'm moving, but I still want to try to attend.

Is anyone interested in an Intermediate tournament? either as a real tournament or the same as our novice tournaments (ie a learning experience)

Otherwise the items Chuck has listed sound good to me.

The events sound good thus far, I plan to be there. Last year was sort of hard to make with other things going on, but I plan to hit all days this year.

The intermediate tournament might be interesting...particularly if it was held later after the novice ones. Especially as a real tournament, you could draw in some new interest and the novices you just helped out.

An Intermediate late in the week could draw some of the newbies. I remember at GenCon 2006 that we had a father and son who played in one of our regular events (I think it was Battlefest) after buying enough of the homebrewed starters we had on hand to make up big enough armies. They didn't do well, but they did enjoy it. An intermediate would be a better step up for our "novices."

I'm probably not going to be able to make GenCon this year, but if I do I suspect I'll be working the booth demos and running Novice events again, so I probably wouldn't play anyway. And don't feel sorry for me-I really like doing the Novice events, and I think I still hold the record for biggest Novice event at GenCon. Surprisingly, if I played one event, it would probably be an Intermediate, since I like the "little" games and cut my teeth on 24h games.

Ok, I'll setup an intermediate event. So what time and day? 2 hours or 4 hours?

Note: events for 2008 are going up to $2 per 2 hour slot. Not my idea, GenCon's.

So come to DexCon-all events (except for buying the dice for Sealed Box) are FREE once you're registered for the con!

(Glances southward to where this post is going to end up.) Very Happy

I'd say do it later on saturday, that will allow people to do the novice earlier in the day and then do intermediate later than night.

I'd do 2 hours. that gives 30 minutes to explain intermediate rules and then 3 30min rounds.

The date sounds good, I'm not familiar enough with the match times in tournies and such to comment on that portion.

How about a new event: Magestorm Battle. Bring a 36h army, containing at least 6h of magic items (excluding medallions). (Numbers could be tweaked.) This would give players an incentive to try out magic items, or at least an excuse to use them in an army. New players may not even have tried them out.

For this event, you could also add a rule that would allow MIs to be dropped and picked up if an army was eliminated, if the victor had units that could carry the MIs. But I'd lean toward standard rules so players could try them out.

No Monsters Only events? Shocked

Well, just to throw out some ideas: Opposites Attract, All Uncommons, All Rares.

A few ideas come to mind - Novice versions of the most popular alternative stuff (Battlefest?). A strategy discussion presentation, followd by QA, discussion, and then some demos may be interesting as well.

It may be better to call it Magestorm Battlefest...
60 health
bring 1 magic item of each health size (Minimum)
Artifact, Rare, Uncommon, Common

(If you allow medallions you will see allot of Silver) Wink

You really almost need to allow medallions if you make it mandatory to have a common unit in a battlefest mode,
simply because explode stone could bury the common magic item,
and with battlefest if both opponents group their dice together,
then the explode stone unit could determine the outcome of the game.
That does not sound like much fun....
if you allowed medallions,
the bronze could reforge the common unit...and explode stone...
likewise the silver medallion could retrieve buried magic items...
otherwise I think that Dwarves would become predominant to help prevent this issue.

Special Note:

Perhaps SFR could schedule an Experimental Time slot...
this is where new ideas could be tried.
In the past,
there have been many hours to pass between games...
the room could be used for new concepts...like magestorm battlefest.

If it cost more to schedule something,
then perhaps an unofficial meeting could be set.

Ok, I'm thinking that Sunday would be Misfit Monster Bash.

How about the Friday noon slot being "Player's Choice"? It can be any 36 health format the players desire. I'll start a thread just for that, and on May 1, start a poll. The poll will end on July 1, and the format with the most votes will be played at GenCon. Only rule is that the format must be different than any other format already scheduled (e. g. we will not have another Single race).

Just got this announcement today:

GenCon LLC wrote:
There have been some pretty big developments at Gen Con LLC today and I wanted to make sure that everyone is informed and give you a heads-up so that you hear it from us first.

Peter Adkison wrote:
Gen Con LLC has filed for Chapter 11 protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the State of Washington. The full press release can be found here and Peter has made an announcement in the forums here.

This should in no way affect Gen Con Indy 2008. As the press release states the core show is still strong and vibrant - we´ve already begun working on the details of event review and placement for Indy. Gen Con LLC will continue to operate without interruption during the Chapter 11 process.

If you have any questions or concerns, whether directly related to your events or not, please let me know and I´ll be happy to help you as best I can. Things will no doubt be difficult and complicated this coming year and we will certainly need your patience and understanding.

Thanks,

Derek Guder

After the poor showing at GenCon SoCal, I can't say I'm surprised and I guessing that GenCon Australia won't happen now. Ah well. Chapter 11 is a good way for a large company to walk away from bad decisions.

It'll be interesting to see if Indy gets renamed and run directly under WotC.
