This set of rules is designed to represent a battle encounter at a single terrain between two travelling armys. The idea was to create a smiple Dragon Dice variant that could be played out of a starter box and could be played quickly in little space.

Each warlord brings an army, 2 terrains & 1 dragon.

ARMY
Army size can be what ever both players agree upon. However, the purpose of this excercise is to play quick in little space. Therefore, 12 to 18 points of health are ideal.

DRAGONS
Dragons are summonned as normal but are concidered tame and to be Ivory as opposed to the actual die color.

TERRAINS
To decide which terrain is to be used, both players roll their terrain dice and add their own values together. The player with the highest total gets to choose which of the four terrains is used for the encounter.

SETUP
The terrain is placed in the center of the battle field with the number "1" face up. Both army starts in their reserves. Dragons are set aside to be summoned as needed.

GAME PLAY
Each round consists of 2 phases... Deployment & March.

DEPLOYMENT
Both players roll their entire reserve army and add up their maneuver results (manuevers + icons + special actions). For each point of manuever result a player rolls, they may send one health point of their army to the battle field.

MARCH
Each player now rolls their battle field armys for maneuvers to see who has the battle field advantage. The player with the highest total maneuver points gets to perform a single march. The terrain may be maneuvered and an action gets to happen as normal.

VICTORY
The rest of play is basically the same. Dead units go to their DUA. Burried units go to their BUA. Control of the 8th face still grants the same advantages. The only real difference is the game's victory condition. The game is over when one player still has an army standing on the battle field. Victory is theirs!

Feel free to leave me feedback as to how it works for you!

I like the way this game starts...
all in the reserves, and manuevers brings them to the Battlefield.

I would add dragonkin to help the units that made it out of the reserves...
in case they don't have a really good maneuver army.

This looks good. Razz

My wife and I played this variation the other night and it can definitely be evil if it is one of those nights when maneuvers are not your friends. Evil or Very Mad

Battles are not always easily fought. I too have felt that sting!

Perhaps this could be mitigated by introducing a new Deployment method. i.e. Both players roll, but only the lesser of the two rolls gets to be deployed. I don't know if that would make any sense - or any difference, but it's just a quick thought.

I suggest that each maneuver result permits one die (any size) to move, rather than one health. If the opposing armies are an assortment of dice, the larger ones will move first, and the difference in maneuvers won't have as great an impact.

I tried the single die vs health method of deployment and we didn't like it at all. Using an army of nothing but uncommon and/or rare units vs an army with a typical health mix seemed to give a huge advantage over the more diverse team. This was based on a dozen or so games. I know that's not a great deal of games to go by, but we quickly abandoned that method in favor of the health deployment.

If it works for you & yours, that's great! Wink We may give this another try and see if we don't get different results. Confused

Another option that just came to me...

Each player rolls for deployment. The player with the most maneuver results deploys that many health. The other player deploys that many health - 1.

I'm going to give this method a try tomorrow at my store.

Wow! Great idea!

I must say that this is the very first game variation I REALLY like!
The maneuver/health deployment ist a great way to start the game.

This variation is very easy to understand and to play and might give more newbies a chance to get a hang of the game!

I really like this!! Very Happy

I like this variant very much. I have added a little to it though:

1. the winner of the "deployment" roll must deploy his troops first in full sight of the second player.(this way the second player can choose optimal forces against his opponents superior numbers.)

2. Added a REGROUP phase after the march.Players can pull any dice back into reserves that they wish. The player who conducted the last action pulls his unit(s) back first, then the second player pulls his.

3. During the march phase, each player gets to perform 1 action. The winner of the maneuver roll (for battlefield advantage) gets to decide who acts first.

4. During his action, a player may perform the designated action (terrain die face) with his battlefield army OR may perform a magic action with his reserve army (missile if amazons).

5.dragon kin may be summoned into the battlefield army.Same limit as to amount of DK are in effect (1/3 total army size).

6.Magic items do not count as units when moving onto the battlefield during deployment. They do however count toward your total army size though.

7.Optional: Each player gets a "free"(does not count toward army size) King die that must stay in reserve army.

8.Optional: Optional: Any spell that does not target an opponents army or units may be cast from reserves.IE a player may summon dragons to the battlefield from reserves, dragon kin may be summoned into reserves to later be deployed, terrain targeting spells may also be cast from reserves.

9.Dragons attack the battlefield army of the first player to take an action each round (just before they take that action).
