The approach I want to take is similar to the DragonDice rulebook. Assume you know nothing, just dice and a rulebook. Start with descriptions of terms and pieces and then describe how to use them.
Thus we build up the existing game as Mark designed it and provide the foundation to expand into the rest of the game and beyond.
My first task is thus to take the TOC of the existing rulebook and I'm going to tweak each section into those pieces I feel we need to explain etc. I'll post that in a seperate thread and we can start refining and defining it until its done.
Naturally I expect everyone to prove me wrong and show me a better way. I'm the first to admin i'm wrong. |

| Just an update. Mark is going to be creating a user account here. He already has a working rulebook, so rather than posting my sorry attempt I'm awaiting him to provide his as a starting point. He also has some hand written notes from a few years ago that will help to kickstart the process once he gets them typed in. |

| Has anyone heard from Mark? I haven't heard from him in about 3 weeks and I'm in a holding pattern waiting for his version of the rules, which is better than mine.... |

FYI - the development of this project is being moved to a private forum.
If you are serious about development and can accept your ideas being accepted or not, then post a request to join (which might or might not be accepted).
As versions are completed they will be posted here. _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |

Jim, did you ever get a chance to play Duels back when Mark was doing it? _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |

I've only know about Duels from the forum,
I've never seen it played.
I have played many adventure computer games that have ongoing quests.
Sacred Gold/with the Underworld package.
Dark Wizard
Shandalar (MTG computer role playing game)
Eye of the Beholder (this one is different everytime you play)
a few more I can't remeber off the top of my head right now...
but in most of these games...
you choose a character...
they gain abilites through battle and apon finishing quests.
Sometimes you just find magic things and gold.
There's ussually a bit of puzzle to solve and fighting.
Now how Duels works...
well since you are rewritting it,
I thought these influences may help out.
Most of the games have a land you travel on to find discoveries,
or dungeons to explore.... |

Is there room for one more? I know I've not posted much round here so you wont know much about me, but I'd like to be able to help out on this project if I can.
Like Jim, my only experience of Duels is from what I've read here. But from what I have read it sounds intriguing to say the least, and would really enjoy being a part of bringing it to fruition.
I guess I should add a bit about me:-
I've got a good 22+ years experience of role-playing/hobby gaming in general, and have been involved with Dragon Dice since TSRs release day (here in the UK) to a greater or lesser extent.
I'm a rules lawyer by nature, but also like tinkering with existing ideas and building on them; occasionally, this even improves things
I like logic and elegance in design, and would hope to be able to help bring that to the ruleset.
I've also created and run a number of role-playing campaigns in my time, so contributing to the setting of a game is not beyond me either.
Cliff, if you want to know anything else just PM me and ask; that way I don't need to keep "blowing my own trumpet" in public - I'm English, we're not very good at it |

I won't have much time to help out at least until November (and the end of marching band season), but I did play Duels once with Scott Ostrander at Shore Con a number of years ago. If I can fill in any gaps, please let me know. _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun

Thanks Steve.
The one thing I'm having trouble remembering...
I know when you start out you have a terrain pool of 4 terrains and then at the beginning of a duel you roll them all and then 'X' happens and you end up with only one proposed terrain.
What I don't remember is what 'X' is. I know that terrain roll isn't where the terrain starts. So the only thing I can recall is that you are forced to propose the terrain which rolls the highest.
Does that match your memory? _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |

BTW - thank you everyone for your interest. I have some 'prep work' to get the environment ready (basically just some forum rules) and then I will start adding people to the forum.
I just have to find the freetime to do that work. _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |

I have also conquered every DUNE computer game ever made.
not all were command conquer games...some were puzzle based.

Cliff - go ahead and add me in to the new forum once you get that set up. I'm not sure how much of the design work I'll be able to help on but I probably played Duels more than anyone else when Mark was doing it. At one point I know I had some (most?) of the reference material he had written down as well as some notes from when you and I were trying to work out and document some of the details. Hopefully I'll be able to find all of that in the mountain of DD related stuff piled in the closet.
Besides, I've got the only known documented 15th level (maximum under the rules as they were written) independent Duels character: Stormbringer, a 15th level pure Frostwing Mage. _________________ John Koslow |

Oh yeah....
I also have played the Moon project and Earth 2150.
In all these command conquer games...you explore the terrains to gain either minerals or spice or Gold,
this is used to build more units..
or Buildings, weapons or spells.
So basically,
the Campaign would be scattered with hidden treasures,
as the Character progresses they stumble onto or discover powers or gold...
and engaging in battles will also provide upgrades. |
