I have a question on the SAIs of Rare Magic Items. Attune says it counts as "magic points" and Bash as "save points" (I haven't checked the others but I assume they're the same). There's only one icon on the SAI side; does that mean that an Attune roll is just 1 magic point and a Bash roll is just 1 save? Or do they count as 3 since they're on the 3-health die?

(I'd previously always assumed it was 1, but that meant that if you wanted reliable roll results and didn't care about the SAI, an uncommon item was better than a rare, which is screwy. So now I'm checking.)

Each SAI on a unit counts as one point of effect. So, if a rare unit has a die face with four Cantrip icons, it counts as four points of effect. The exception is the Double Strike SAI on the Tiger-Folk unit (Feral rare heavy troop): this single SAI counts as four points of effect. Each single SAI on a rare magic item counts as three points of effect. Each single SAI on a monster, artifact or medallion counts as four points of effect (unless stated otherwise in the SAI description).

Does this answer your questions? Cool

Yes, but not very well. It needs the bolding I've added above.

I had wondered about the Tiger-Folk myself; do you know, was he a misprint or did Double-Strike need to be a single icon because it had previously only been on monsters? (This of course having been TSR's doing, I wouldn't blame you if you didn't know.)

My guess is misprint or rather an error on someone's part be it in design or production.

Before the SFR clarifiaction...
I always thought the tiger-folk Double strike was like a Monster's SAI...
A Single SAI depicting it's power based on the unit's health.

So I never thought the Tiger-Folk Double Strike SAI was ever a misprint...
rather it was the first moster based SAI on a Rare.

So long story short...I thought the Tiger Folk Double strike was 3 melee and roll again. (like a leopard rider)

Much to my likeing..SFR clarified it to be 4 melee and roll again.

Now the Wyvren rider has a Single SAI Fly...but it also is accompanied with a 5 SAI fly...so that was not hard to figure out.

Yes, the best way to figure this out is to count the icons on the die. With no exceptions of which I am aware, a 1-health unit always has 6 icons other than ID distributed across its sides, which since no side is allowed to be blank invariably means 2 of something and 1 of four other somethings. 2-healthers usually have 2, 2, 2, 3, and 3 icons on their sides, and rares usually have 3, 3, 3, 3, and 4, with 4 typically being the SAI, though sometimes it's 4 of a regular and SAIs on two of the 3s. However, certain races have skewed distribution for more unpredictable roll results; Lava Elves have it the best/worst, with most of their dice having a side with only 1 of something, then an inordinate number of the same something on the opposite side.

I think it's mostly Death and Fire races that do this, although I seem to recall the Feral are an exception. (I like to think of this as a flavor-based distinction - psychotic Death, tempermental Fire, and the wild animal-folk are all appropriate sorts to max out sometimes and spazz out other times, while other races are more even-tempered to reflect their rational nature - the exception being Frostwings, who seem like they ought to be rational but still get the uneven distribution common to most Death races.)

Not counting IDs, all commons have 6 icons, all uncommons have 12 icons. Most rares have 16 icons. There are two rare dice in the game that only have 15 icons: Feral Wolf-Folk, and Lava Elf Conqueror. No one knows why. Some dice have more even distributions then others. The worst is actually the Scalders. Most of the Scalder rares have 6 icons on one side. Undead on the other hand, have every side but one with 3 icons, the other has 4 icons.

For the Conqueror it was probably just a mistake; easy to lose count when you're bunching all but one of the unit's melee icons on one side. Wolf-Folk I'm thinking it was deliberate and may have had something to do with the fact he had Rend, while his buddy Tiger-Folk had double-strike. But who knows.

(And PS, I just worked up a homebrew race that's almost as bad as the scalders! They were mono-red, and it seems to mostly be the red races that do this high/low thing, as if to suggest they're chaotic and unpredictable, which certainly applies to my guys.)
