Say you have a group of mages, all of different races. Can all the magic they roll be used for racial spells, or just the magic from the specific race unit? For example, a firewalker and frostwing both roll for three magic each. Can I cast 6 points of firewalker magic?

No. If you want to cast basic spells, then you can use that 6 points of blue on one spell. Otherwise, you have 3 points of Firewalker spells, and 3 of Frostwing. On the other hand, if you generate magic from magic items, then while you can't change the color, you can cast racial spells of that color as long as you have at least one unit from that race. That unit doesn't have to generate any magic, it just has to be there.

Take a look at the Starter rules, under "Reference section", then under "Spell Attributes", then under "Racial Limitations".
