Yes, its early, but make those travel arrangements early and start saving your pennies.

Anyone know they are coming to Gencon2010 this year? anyone who's gonna help do demos and run events?

Anyone like/dislike the events schedule last year? Thoughts for the novelty events?

I wish it was august already, I'm tired of this cold weather.

At this point, as far as I know I'll be there.

Assuming I'm there, I'll run the main events.

Based on the number of players for each event, I'd say get rid of some of the constructed events and replace them with sealed/pre-constructed events.

Do you have the numbers or will I have to get them from John or Gencon directly?

I know that the thursday constructed events are always poorly attended.

I know that when we advertise the events at the booth we get more attendance at the sealed events (last year was crazy busy).

We are limited on table space for the events we can hold, would it be worth dropping something to have an Intermediate/advanced demo event this year? in 2008 it helped some players learn the fuller rules (but of course they didn't come back in 2009...)

and I think that the sunday 'new product' event was a good idea, even if the sealed concept didn't work due to the random distribution. I don't think the new product is public yet for this year, but we could still hold this event on sunday.

We need to have an "Intermediate" pre-constructed event or three. Basically intermediate events are just the starter dice, but with the full set of rules. Since there are no "expansion" dice, the rules are simpler based on that alone. I propose that we take one full demo set and then the player has 2 races for a total of 36 health. Or as an alternative, take 2 demo sets into one for the intermediate in order to have 36 health single-race armies.

We can easily schedule the intermediate event to follow the novice. we might get people to attend both, one right after another.

From my conversations with Derek last year it all comes down to chairs. We can get a certain number of chairs for the weekend and can fill them as often as we want and have people to run events.

Well, if Brad S, John K, Mike D all show up, that should be a good core group to run the events.

Don't forget we have an official policy now on hotel and badge reimbursement for helping us run events. Our goal at GenCon is to let as many people as possible know we are around, and get them interested in the game. A secondary goal (very secondary) is to make money. We consider it good enough to just break even. If you ask Tiffany Smile , our other goal is to make sure we don't have to haul any product back!

I agree with having some Intermediate events. I suggest "Constructed Starter", where you assemble two 18-health armies with the same ratio of dice sizes as found in a typical starter - but with any two races. Scheduling one after a "Sealed Starter" event should draw a good fraction of those attendees.

I also agree that constructed events on Thursday have a poor draw. A Novice or "sealed" event might prove more popular - or possibly a "playtest" session.

I plan to attend.

You already have those numbers (I sent you a "copy" of the tournament results for your tournament ranking software). They are also here: http://sfr-inc.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=2226. Chuck should have all of the numbers as well.

I'll look again for it, I just need to know how many players were in each event to know what was popular.

Here's a quick summary:

Sealed Box (20 players)
Eldarim Sealed Box (9 players)
Single Race (7 players)
World Championship (6 players)
Battlefest (6 players)
No Magicians (3 players)
Monster Bash 100 (2 players)

I think we should drop the last two. We will not be doing Eldarim Sealed box again, that was just to promote Eldarim. But clearly we need more sealed box events.

Suggestions from the past: Fire in the Sky (one starter, one Firewalker kicker), Night of the Dead (one starter, one Undead). New suggestions, same format, but use up Feral unboxed dice. Also can do with Treefolk (moldy boxes, toss box, keep dice). So all of those are a Starter plus a kicker. Sort thru the mess, keep 2 terrains, 36 health of dice, both dragons (whether you can use them or not). If you do use the Feral or Undead bags of dice, then don't put Undead/Feral starter in the mix.

I pretty much agree. I think I would like to schedule the sunday noon event as the 'new product sealed'. I know its a bit strange this year, but it'll still be fun.

If we are just using up unboxed dice, we could easily do a draft format of the first 4 races. Throw a bunch of dice on the table and go around the table until everyone has 36 health.

would anyone be interested in a draft format? the price point cwould be cheaper for the event. and you still get to take the dice home.

Do people just not like these events, or is the 12-2 timeslot that kills them?

I'm working on the schedule for this year and I hate to stick something there if its not going to draw players.

Problem with those time slots is that everyone in booth can't go to them. And we have to staff the events. Not everyone is at GenCon on Thursday and Friday afternoon. Saturday is always full.

I'm all in favor of dropping those as constructed events, and instead have more novice or even intermediate events. Given how tight we are on staff on Thursday and Friday, perhaps just running Novice events all day would be fine. Or run a Novice event, follow with Intermediate, and alternate. Something like this:

9am Novice
noon Intermediate
3pm Novice
7pm Intermediate (this one would overlap with the main event)

Do just a 7pm event on Thursday and Friday. Saturday have the above, plus a noon event and a 7pm event. Sunday, run a 10am and 1pm Novice and Intermediate, with an advanced event at noon.

That leaves:
Battlefest
Worlds
Sealed box (starters only)
Sealed box plus
and one more event

Our new product for GenCon this year doesn't lend itself too well to a sealed event. (If you read this, and don't know, don't ask, we won't answer just yet). So we need another event that works. I think Single Race works on Thursday night because it's popular with our "staff". Whether or not that's the best event to have is open to debate.

Chuck, its scary how much you and I think alike. I'm working on three different proposals and you just repeated one of them word for word.

I agree with the noon events. I've almost dropped them, but I hate to leave that time slot empty.

I worry that the word 'intermediate' will scare away too many new players who wont read the description. so I was gonna limit it to one intermediate a day. Plus the 7pm novice is very popular with people who want to do a novice after the hall closes. I hesitate to make the 7pm be a sealed event because it overlaps with the main constructed event.

as for the Sunday noon event, I agree that 'youknow' doesn't work well in a starter format and I'm not sure a play-test of the 2011 product (whatever it will be) would work either.

I'm shooting for populating 3-4 tables at all times.
The 4 days are separated by /'s

This could be covered by 2-3 people easily.

10-12 Novice/Novice/Novice/Novice
12-2 Novice/SealedPlus/Worlds/SealedPlus
2-4 Novice/Novice/Novice/NULL
4-6 Intermediate/Intermediate/Intermediate/NULL
6-8 Single Race/Sealed/Battlefest/NULL
7-9 Novice/Novice/Novice/NULL

A lot of people don't seem to want to play a late night event.

Only two comments:

The times I proposed gave an hour break between the novice/intermediate event times. We may want to think about that. Going straight from 10-8 is a bit tough.

Let's face it, when the exhibit hall closes at 6pm, it's at least 6:30 before everyone from the booth can be ready to play. It would be nice to have some time to get a quick dinner. We may want to start our main evening events at 7.

I agree that a late night event just doesn't work. Especially when the exhibit hall opens at 10. That means getting up at 8:30 at the latest, getting some breakfast, and getting to booth by no later than 9:45. On Thursday, we will have to ready to open at 9am.

An alternate that I would love to do is hold 4 novice events (10,1,4,7)
and 3 non-novice events (12,3,6) but I don't think we have enough non-staff players (beyond 2-3) to play in the 12 or 3 event.

If we had two demo-ers dedicated to the event hall, we could do
Novice (10,1,4,7)
Intermediate or sealed (12,3,6)
Staff Favorite (6 or 7)

and each person gets an hour between events.

my assumption is that this would be two+ people. John and Mike demo and Brad doesn't like to. This would give John/Mike 2 hours between events if they alternated.

I agree, but I probably wont eat until 9pm anyway. I'll spend from 6-7 shutting down the booth and balancing the daily books.

Cliff,

You didn't mention me for booth duty. I volunteer for the exhibit hall, if that's where you need me.
