Hello All,

Well, it's official, the event submissions for Gamestorm 12 (Vancouver, WA.) have been approved. The event schedule is: Sealed Starter Friday, March 26th 8p-12a (cost: $20.00). Open-Play Saturday, March 27th 7p-12a (cost: Free). I'm hoping for a good turnout. I will be running demos all day in the dealer hall, then running the evening events after the hall closes. We have great support from Guardian Games.

I have a couple of questions regarding running the Sealed Starter. Are there copies of the tournament sheet somewhere? What about prizes? any suggestions?

Thank You for all of your support!
Dave

I suggest you get a copy of the 'Standard Floor Rules', it contains the info you need to run a tournament .

The basic idea is that you score points during a round and then you pair the players up based on score to determine the pairings for the next round (ie better plays better, worse plays worse).

if you have multiple people with the same score, then do them randomly.

however, always remember that no one should play the same opponent twice. so you can break the normal pairing rules to ensure this.

on a tie breaker at the end of the game, if you and I have the same points, but I beat you in a head to head, then I win the tie breaker.

Also, a nice trick, once you've run several tournaments you will see potential for ties to come up in the final rounds. with the leeway given you to do pairings, you can sometimes avoid this.

You can easily make a tournament sheet or Brad might have one from years past.

Cliff

This is basically Swiss pairings ala MTG - I'd be happy to assist you further as I'm a seasoned MTG head judge, but there's also scads of info online in such places as wikipedia and the Wizards main site.

Most all two player sports and competitions use this. We used it for Imajica CCG as well as AvP CCG and Terminator CCG. It wouldn't surprise me if it was the most used format.

Thank You very much for your suggestions. With the knowledge you just shared and my experience last year at GenCon, I think I can pull it off. I also have a few well experienced gamers who have volunteered to help me, if I need guidance running a tournament.

Now I just need a tournament score sheet/template or I can create my own.

Also, any ideas about prizes?

Thanks, Very Happy
Dave

do you know how many people you expect to show up and if they will be new or experienced players?

a small number of attendies or new players would like free dice to grow their collection.

a large number or experienced players prefer promos or prototypes like we do at gencon (but depends on the size of the con)

Dave (dproman) did a fantastic job running the tournament on friday night, thanks a heap Dave! Also thanks for that rather gruelling 60 pt , 3-man game last night...still cant believe the undead were able to fend off 63 melee hits from a Scalder army hyped up with burning hands...and then survive 2 ivory dragon breaths+ 16 pt damage from a hybrid. Tons of fun to roll that many dice, but the magic became a bit underpowered with that many. Cool

Hello All,

Post Con report:
The convention had another good crowd this year! I was allowed a demo table in the Dealer Hall this year. We had excellent exposure being in the center of the room, right next to our wonderful supporting retailer Guardian Games! I ran at least 7 full demos and many (I lost count) quick 1-2 minute overviews of DD.
Friday night we held a "sealed starter" tournament. We had six participants, 2 were new players that had demoed with me earlier in the day. Congratulations to Noah Drewrey (new player!) our winner, who took home a collection of Goblins (2 ea. R, 3 ea. U, 6 ea. C, 3 M)! Thank you to all of our participants! Also, a special Thank You to last years GEN CON crew who instructed me (on how to run a tournament) and gave me the confidence to run this event!
Saturday night we held an open play event for 5 hours. We played a couple of 3 player games. The 2nd game, which lasted several hours (60 pt w/DK) was finally declared a draw (at 12:30am), with each player controlling an Eighth face with very few casualties.
Over the course of the weekend, we found some new casual players, several interested in trading dice to prepare their armies for next year! Very Happy

Overall a great experience, However, I think I want to change a few things for next year:
[1] Being in the Dealer Hall was a good idea, but not the best idea. After talking with Gamestorm Staff, I think we will be better served with a stronger presence in the open game room. People are continually walking around looking for a new game to try, which favors impromptu Demos.
[2] More tournaments/ More Open Play all scheduled earlier in the day (so they don't run into the late evening/early morning Laughing).
[3] Sponsorship of Gamestorm by SFR Inc. ( Wink).

Again, a BIG Thank You to the following people & groups, I couldn't have done it without you!:
Guardian Games
Stumptown Bone Rollers Guild
Gamestorm
SFR Inc.
It was a great show! Let's make next years even better!
Dave

Congratulations, Dave!

Within three days I will be retired and then I will start doing my thing here too! I will sure let you know.

Please take also a look at your mail, I sent you a PM.

And now it's back to my students again, I have a lot of copies here beside me and they need "marks" on it! Sad

Great job Dave!

Don't forget that the game sessions prompted a trading session on Sunday!
