Gencon has started! Things got off to a rocky start when none of the computers would work and one of the lights for the back wall is not working but things are much better now and we are humming along. Events are going well. Sales are good. Battlefields are doing well
Our Gencon exclusive this year are some Dice Bags. They will become avaliable after we return home with what ever we have left. It was a very limited printing so when they are gone they are gone.
Here is a shot of the dice bags. Pictures of the Battlfields will be up later today.

Yay for news from GenCon! And Nice bags, those look pretty sweet!
I'm really looking forward to the news on the battlefields, especially the new distribution of faces for the new frontiers.
Also: any news on the results of the tournaments would be awesome. What won, what showed up, those kind of things. Gah, I just wished I was there to follow it all...!

Well the official event posting will come after the Con, but I can tell you that we played No Magicians yesterday. four players and I believe John Monet took first. I wasn't one of the four so I don't know any more details.
I was one of the 8 players in the Single Race last night. Dan took first with his Goblins. I took second with my Death Acolytes army. John Koslow tied for 3rd with treefolk. It was a really exciting event with many surprising events (like 12 smite killing 33% of your army in a single roll).
Today we are doing two sealed events.
I have to go work the booth, so I will craft an email about terrain specifics, but the rules are online in the starterrules pdf and the distribution should be available on chuck's website and Pi's program soon. |

Everyone is home, but sleeping after the 'best 4 days in gaming'.
Digital photos are starting to drift in and I'll post them as I have time. I also need to get some pictures of the new dice and update the shopping cart to have the new product and the left over dice bags.
I have a huge list and am taking it in order (school just started today as well, so 4 kids in new classes to deal with)
If I leave anything undone in a few days, just poke me with a stick... _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |

ok, more about events. I only know the ones I played in or heard about...
Thus that would be sealed, worlds and battlefest.
I don't recall who won in the sealed box, but we had 16 players! which is awesome. I know that the three SFR members who played all ranked below 4th.
Worlds, I did not play in however Dan won with his Leopard Riders again. If no one else will stand up to beat him I may have to come out of retirement....
Finally battlefest is always awesome. We had... 13-ish players which included several repeats from new player last year. which is awesome. Battlefest is always a blast and the event I enjoy the most. The placings were very close! There was a three way tie for first (Dan, JohnK and me) and a three way tie for fourth! Thus the top 6 players were all within a few points of each other. Another round might've flattened it out, but we were over the time limit for the event.
Someone should be posting the official results with all names and the winning worlds army soon. _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |

Well, it's been a week past GenCon, and although the "official" results of the various Dragon Dice events have not been posted, I'll post the armies that I used to win "Single Race", "Worlds", and tie for first in "Battlefest" and share some of my observations.
Dan Burkley's "Single Race" Goblin Army
1 x Troll
1 x Harpies
1 x Death Naga
2 x Death Mage (Goblin)
2 x Leopard Rider (Goblin)
2 x Filcher
1 x Marauder
1 x Hedge Wizard
1 x Wardog Rider
1 x Swampland Temple
1 x Swampland Standing Stones
1 x Black/Gold Drake
1 x Black/Gold Wyrm
"Single Race" was listed as "No Magestorm" as opposed to an Intermediate event, so Hybrid Dragons were permitted (otherwise I would use a Gold Drake & Gold Wyrm for an Intermediate event). Many oppposing armies used Swamplands (like Treefolk), which made my Initiative decision very easy on many occasions. Cliff Wigg's all-black Eldurim army gave this army a tougher time than both of us had banked on - but that was a great match to see what one of the new Eldurim-based armies could do, and I was impressed.
Dan Burkley's World Championship Army
1 x DragonLord
1 x Necromancer (LE)
1 x Death Mage (Goblin)
3 x Leopard Rider (Goblin)
1 x Wardog Rider (Goblin)
1 x Troll (Goblin)
1 x Fireshadow (Firewalker)
1 x Unicorn (Treefolk)
1 x Gold Medallion
1 x Swampland City
1 x Swampland Standing Stones
1 x Swampland Forest minor terrain
1 x Coastland Forest minor terrain
1 x Flatland Forest minor terrain
1 x Highland Forest minor terrain
1 x Black/Gold Drake
1 x Black/Gold Wyrm
1 x Gold Dragonkin Champion
1 x Black Dragonspy
1 x Gold Dragonmount
1 x Red Dragonscout
1 x Black Dragontroop
1 x Gold Dragontroop
This army was very similar to the army I used last year. The army works best in the early game, winning the initiative and pounding one of the opponent's armies at the start (assuming a melee face shows up at the start, which often happened). The Gold Medallion and Unicorn offer opportunities to teleport itself and another unit to another terrain, which can give a local advantage on the first turn to help pursue that first turn melee strategy (which came into play on two occasions during Worlds). If I had any kind of numerical advantage, I always attacked (it's a melee-based army and you can't be afraid to attack, even against an army full of Counter SAI units) - but if I was even in numbers and the 3-health mages were present, I thought twice about it. This army can win by out-maneuvering its opponent as well as by force of arms, which it did on two occasions. The army is light on magicians (14-health), so it can only compete with another magician army in an exchange of spells for one or two turns at best, although if it captures an 8th Face, it can last a little longer. The non-Goblin units in this army all have a special role, and really make this army better than the sum of its parts. The Unicorn had six opportunities to use its Dispel Magic, but failed its roll every time (plus the first time I had the opportunity and forget to roll it at all). Despite this lackluster performance, the Unicorn was the most popular first target for opponents to attempt to eliminate - and I don't blame them for their decision as it has proven just as useful as the Fireshadow.
Dan Burkley's BattleFest Army (3-way tie for first place)
1 x DragonSlayer
2 x DragonLord
1 x Necromancer (LE)
2 x Death Mage (Goblin)
1 x Filcher (Goblin)
5 x Leopard Rider (Goblin)
1 x Wardog Rider (Goblin)
2 x Troll (Goblin)
1 x Fireshadow (Firewalker)
1 x Unicorn (Treefolk)
1 x Gold Medallion
1 x Swampland City
1 x Swampland Standing Stones
1 x Swampland Forest minor terrain
1 x Coastland Forest minor terrain
1 x Flatland Forest minor terrain
1 x Highland Forest minor terrain
1 x Black/Gold Drake
1 x Black/Gold Wyrm
1 x Gold Wyrm
1 x Black Dragonkin Champion
1 x Gold Dragonkin Champion
1 x Black Dragonspy
1 x Gold Dragonspy
1 x Gold Dragonmount
1 x Gold Dragonsentry
1 x Black Dragontroop
1 x Gold Dragontroop
The army works best in the early game, winning the initiative and pounding one of the opponent's armies at the start (assuming a melee face shows up at the start, which often happened). The Gold Medallion and Unicorn offer opportunities to teleport itself and another unit to another terrain, which can give a local advantage on the first turn to help pursue that first turn melee strategy. The army is light on magicians (21-health), so it can only compete with another magician army in an exchange of spells for one or two turns at best, although if it captures an 8th Face, it can last a little longer. The two DragonLords proved very useful by rolling Cantrip SAIs often, which also let me shift units around (Path) or add extra melee damage (Burning Hands). The Leopard Riders can't be relied on to deliver extra damage with their Rend SAI, but when they do "get on a roll" it can wipe out an entire army (but some of the new Eldurim armies can be surprisingly resilient). This army faced one of the co-winner's armies (John Koslow's Lava Elf/Frostwing Army) and defeated it (not that I would want to fight it again), but did not fight the other co-winner's army (Cliff Wigg's Scalders).
With the introduction of new terrains in the Battlefields expansion, I expect some new army compositions to take advantage of the new terrain types. I also expect to see more Eldurim armies in the future. _________________ Daniel Burkley

I think our two armies would've been decided by the terrain roll. If you got to go first with melee. I'd be done. If I'd gone first with missile I'd have been done.
You would've won the horde roll, so I'm curious, would you choose to go first or take your swamp over my coastland? _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |

That would have depended on our armies' relative positions and compositions. I often elect to go first, but I go through an assessment of my opponent's armies and whether the Frontier terrain would be a significant asset or not (especially if there is a full-strength army at the Frontier already). The few times I elected to choose the terrain, it proved to be a pivotal decision in each of those games - often changing the opening strategy and course of the game (which often benefited me far more than it did my opponents).
The choice would be a tough one, as I suspect you would have the Scalders at the Frontier (and the Dwarves at Home or as the Horde). The Coastland has a lot of missile faces, which would be tough to confront, unless it were at a '5' face, which could be maneuvered to a melee face. But, if I choose the Swampland, you would have the opportunity to attack first, or vacate the area. You would decide where the fight would be (and on what terms). If the faces came up high, then it would be a difficult match for you, but if they came up 2-4, then it would be a difficult match for me. _________________ Daniel Burkley

Exactly, so much comes down to that terrain roll. but you are correct. I would've had the scalders at the frontier and the dwarves at my home.
Honestly it wouldn't've surprise me if you'd gone first and then pulled all units into reserves. unless the terrains were high enough you thought you couldmaneuver me off missile.
letting me go first could've been the game for ya if it came up missile.
I guess we will never know. I'm happy with the tie for first. _________________ Multiplayer Champion Gencon11/Battlefest Champion(tied) GenCon10/World Champion GenCon07/National Champion Origins05/Intermediate Champion GenCon02/Novice Champion Origins99 |
