Just thought I'd put a positive experience up here where people can see it, instead of buried deep in some other thread. I ordered several boosters and a set of Hunters from SFR on February 11, and they arrived at my house today, February 22. That's 11 days from order to delivery, which, given that we have one person (Cliff) filling orders once a week or so is a very solid performance, and very comparable to other small, Internet- based businesses I've dealt with. My kudos to the new efficiency at SFR! _________________ Steve "DDice" Braun

I figured maybe those of us who order could make this a running thread.
I got my latest order today in record time!
Thanks Tiffany and Cliff!

Less than 7 days from end of auction to the UK.
Most Impressed by SFR's shipping quality and costs.

You are welcome! I had a question about the customs procedure when you get your box. Do you have to pay to get it out of customs? Pick it up somewhere special? Didn't know how that works.

The dreaded customs
If the value of the goods (excluding shipping etc) is less than $33 there is no customs duty.
If a GIFT is sent then this value can be a maximum of $66.
If either of these values is over the amount then (UK) customs will hit you for 3.5% duty AND 17.5 VAT. Yip, that is 21% of the total value of the goods and another 21% added to the shipping too.
So if you are sent $80 of goods and $20 shipping, customs will require $21 payment. In UK this paid by the post office and passed on to you for payment upon delivery.
USPS is ALWAYS customs checked before entry into Europe, other carriers appear to be at random.
Devaluing the goods or marking as GIFT (when it is not) is illegal and you will go to jail and have lots of time to polish your dice!
(This is the 'basic' rules for the UK customs (The rest of Europe is very similar Diet-er) )
Disclaimer: My own holistic viewpoint of the situation ! |

Dang! It's been quite a while that I ordered something new from overseas and I hoped you could tell me something different!
(One might call it being naive to expect things having changed for good, and -in fact- I didn't do so!) _________________

Mutiny!!!!!!!
The funny thing is, I've seen UK websites that offer to chop off some of the price to US customers, since they won't have to pay the VAT on products they send outside the EU. (One site offered to discount 17.5% off the price to US customers.)
I feel bad for you guys. It would be an impossible task to convince me that VAT's have any positives. |

I want to post some comments here:
Before I begin: I'm not an expert, so if anything I write here is wrong please correct it.
Whenever you buy something (within your state) your government wants that you pay for this (In the EU: 16% of the money you have spent). These 16% sales tax are already included in the price you pay. However if someone from outside the EU orders a product he (and hence the company) need not pay these 16%, instead he has to pay the 'import sales tax' of his state (which should be approximately the same). (So I believe it's easy for a company in the EU to reduce the price by ~16% for foreign orders. (I don't know if an US company can reduce their price in the same way.))
If you order from outside the EU you have to pay first 3.5% custom (from the entire money you have spent - that is: The price for the product plus the price for shipping). Then additionally that dreaded 16% import sales tax is added. However there are some exceptions where the import sales tax is just 7%!! These exceptions are: food, books, newspapers, collectibles, orthopedic gadgets, ...
I wouldn't call it a collectible if you buy an originally sealed case from SFR, but things may look different if you order single dice (and even the DCM or any novel) from Chuck. If he declares the content of his package as 'Collectibles' (in German: 'Sammelstücke') you may get them 9,3% cheaper. (But I'm really not sure if this is true!)
Another exception is this: If someone in the USA is going to send you a present (= you pay zero) which is not worth more than 45€ (this time it's just the value - without shipping), then there is no custom and no import sales tax (as long as you get your presents just casually). The same is true if you order for less than 22€ from a company (again just the price for the product (One frostwing rare promo for instance) - without shipping).
US companies often use private forwarding agencies which will add an additional fee (which my dictionary isn't able to translate). In this case it can happen that you should pay even far more than those ~20%. (Take care if you order from an unknown company.) As far as I've seen in these posts this is not true for SFR.
As I said above I can give you no guarantee that this (especially the numbers) is correct. |

Autopost,
I'm sure the numbers you posted are correct, but I'm not sure they apply to an individual. Some of that sounds more like company-to-company purchasing.
Here's why the VAT sucks to an American. I've ordered products from overseas before (directly from manufacturers, from retailers, individuals, etc.) and have never paid any customs fees, import taxes, etc....and if I buy something over the internet within the US, and buy from outside my particular state (Missouri), I don't pay ANY tax on it. If I buy within my state, then yes, I pay something like 7-8% tax. (not including shipping)
All of which is why I feel for Europeans who have to pay the VAT, or any kind of import taxes, customs,etc....now, I think some of the stuff you were referring to applies to a US company buying 3 cases of rolled steel, or 1200 cubic foot-board' worth of lumber, etc....but that is more related to trade wars, subsidies, and most-favored-nation status, not an individual customer in the US buying something.
In this particular case, it can prevent someone (such as Dieter) from making a purchase he would dearly like to make. So he's stuck searching high and low for Timpo Toys for me, to trade for dice. |

As Dept Fife alluded to, There is a similar thing that can be done (but you are already benifiting from it).
When you 'mail order' something from outside your state, you pay no tax to the state where the product is coming from AND no tax to the state you are in.
That is one thing I have to keep track of, when someone from Oklahoma makes an order, I have to calculate tax and keep track of it. (doesn't happen very often).
I got caught in this the other day. A mail order company that had a presence in all 50 states, so you had to pay sales tax anyway.

Yes, it does, Richard!
I bought T's and sunglasses from the "Wings Shop" and had to pay customs and tax, since the stuff was new and sealed! (That was five or six years ago, but obviously nothing has changed yet!) _________________

Sorry! I was referring to someone from America buying something from Europe. (though I know you were talking mostly to Dieter & co. in Europe, buying either from America or Europe.) Just throwing in my (unnecessary) opinion that all those taxes/fees can prevent someone from buying something they would like. And the fact that I can pay 17% less for something than Dieter can (before adding shipping, of course) just seems goofy. |
