Just studied the King's Die's rules.

It says that you can either recruit a 1hp-unit from your DUA to the reserves (meaning: just take a 1hp-unit out of your DUA and place it into your reserve area)

or

you can promote a 1 health worth unit from your DUA to the reserves.

What's the difference??
Does that mean to e.g. remove a 2hp-unit from the reserves and exchange it with a 3hp-unit from the DUA ( = 1hp MORE in general) or can I only promote a 1hp-unit to become a 2hp-unit??

Just a matter of language problem, I guess!? I'm tumbling over the "one health worth" term!

You can promote any size unit (except 4-health units of course). The wording should say that you can promote one unit.

The key difference between recruiting and promoting is this: recruiting means taking a common unit from your DUA and placing it in your army; promoting means taking a unit from your army and exchanging it with a unit from your DUA that is (a) from the same race and (b) worth one health more.

No the wording is exactly correct: you can promote one-health. It has to say it that way, or the condition when it's rolled and you can promote four-health won't make any sense. Look at the rules for promotion, and it will be clearer.

I'd be interested to know if you come across any more of these 'language' problems. There are many phrases in the rules that are distinct in English, but might be blurred when translated (even mentally).

Cliff

one-health of units is different than a one-health unit, but someone who hasn't done American Grammar all their life might miss the distinction. (not to imply you have the issue)

This was actually one of the biggest problems with the old rules booklets! And they were partly translated in a false way! And a lot of questions weren't answered.
Now the rules are very well worked out (great job, guys!!!) but you can never erase the translation problems for foreign people. Even though my understanding of the English language (including colloquial speech) is fairly good there are still a few parts in the rules which aren't 100% clear since they still leave an alternative how to understand them. We Germans use different grammar and different terms for some things.
(Example: You call it dogs ears (in books!) in English, we call it donkey's ears. Just a simple example showing that you can't translate everything word by word.)
Translating the names is partly difficult, too! You often have to find a "golden way in the middle" (best of both worlds). Like with the Swamp Stalkers. If you translate that name literally, it doesn't make sense in German. Even worse: Feral! Have to come up with a totally different name related to the race's description.
That's why a properly translated version of the rules is an existential question regarding a complex game like DD!
I thought about translating the whole rules and spells section. I got plenty of time presently!

I stand corrected; the rules say one health.

(Twice in one day. Today just isn't my day Sad )

Is this a dirty euphemism in German? Smile

Maybe somebody at SFR could bribe you with some freebies to do a reliable translation? (hint-hint, Chuck & co.)
Note to SFR: Gencon is big. It is supposedly great, fantastic, etc. (I'll find out later this summer.) It has had a high attendance in the 30,000's.
Essen is another matter entirely. Over 120,000 Europeans attend EVERY YEAR, buying all kind of games. Not that SFR is going to set up a booth at Essen, but it is an indicator of the gaming market in Europe. The German/European gaming audience dwarfs the USA/N. America. Good market to try to get into with a good, German translation of the rules. And probably worth a case of Firewalkers or some Frostwing and Scalder promos (the kind on the purchase page) to a dedicated fan who I'm sure would work to get the very best translation possible. Wink
